i The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, December 22, 1986 3 Friends Honor Retiring Nurse Happenings at Central Scho ol St. Joseph's Students Present Christmas Play After 23 years as a nurse in Memorial Hospital Bowmanville, Louise Hamilton has retired. She was honored last Wednesday by co-workers during a retirement party held at the hospital cafeteria. Anna Strike, chairman of the Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, presented Mrs. Hamilton with a plaque and a pair of binoculars as a gift from the Board. And a gift was also received from the Ontario Nurses' Association. Louise Hamilton was most recently employed in the hospital's geriatrics department. St. Stephen's Hosts Christmas Concert by The Press Club Mr. Humber came to Central School's Statesman Press Club after school. He talked about interviewing people. He asked us who we would like to interview and told us about the time he talked to Jesse Barfield who plays baseball for the Blue Jays. Ton interview you need a press card, permission to interview, pad and pencil and a tape recorder. The press box for the Blue Jays is at the C.N.E. Mr. Humber could go to the Blue Jays' dressing room with his press pass. Mr. Humber has written 2 books. One is on history of bikes called "Freewheeling" and the other was about Baseball. Baseball. We found out that if you like something you should write about it, then you can learn more. For instance, if we like wrestling and if we wrote about it, we could know more and or meet real wrestlers such as "Ricky the Dragon Steamboat" or "George the Animal Steel". The press club enjoyed meeting Mr. Humber. OUR TRIP TO THE MILL by 201 and 203 On Wednesday, November 19, at one o'clock we went to the Vanstone Mill near where the dam was broken. We met Mr. Pyker and his son. He showed us animal feed and medicine. He showed us the speedometer that shows how fast the water was flowing. We went downstairs and we saw some equipment. He opened the doors to let us see where the dam was broken. We saw where the old river had been. There was hardly any fish but lots of dirt and rocks. We went up to the attic and we saw an elevator getting pulled up to the top by pulleys. We saw strong beams that hold up the roof. The beams have been there for 140 years. The beams made triangle shapes. We went downstairs to the store and Mr.Pyker gave us chocolate bunnies, and David had a sugarless candy. The Vanstone Mill is a friendly mill that helps us feed our rabbit, Bucky. At the St. Joseph's School in Bowmanville last week, the younger students produced a traditional Nativity Play with musical accompaniment by class choirs. Some of the young performers are pictured above. This group, seen here playing recorders, was just one of many that took their turn on stage during the afternoon Christmas Concert at St. Stephen's school.
