18 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville. December 29,1986 Pontypool and District News by Nettie Aiken Happy New Year! As the end of 1986 approaches, and we proceed into the year 1987, one naturally thinks over the past 365 days and hopes for a better year, fresh and unspoiled, full of a feeling of adventure. Death has claimed the lives of many neighbours, relatives and friends, and we sympathize with those who have been bereaved, yet we know that each memory is precious and makes life sweeter as people adjust to their sorrow, and carry on each day, as they are given strength to cope. It is our hope, as executive members of the Manvers Historical Society, to start building up a taped history of the stories of our senior citizens, who will tell us of our villages and towns of yesteryear, yesteryear, and this as early as possible in the new year. There were some families saw the wonder of birth and experienced the joy, a special bond between mother and child. For these fortunate families, Christmas has a special meaning. Christmas is for children. The Victoria County Pre- School Resource Van comes to the Pontypool Community Centre the third Tuesday of every month. For those unfamiliar with this, it is a toy and book lending library and also has resource books for the parents. All this for the nominal fee of $5.00 a year. The date of the January visit is January 20th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Come out and enjoy the crafts and fun. Parents, it is a chance for your children to socialize and for you also to meet your neighbour. The school children have been real stars in their various programs and service to the community. Thank you to the parents who assist the teachers. The field trips are very educational, broadening the horizons of all who go on them. This fall, things were overcrowded for a while, waiting the arrival of three new portables which were delayed beyond the promised date. Now things have settled down some. The Post Office windows were decorated for Christmas by students from Grandview School, under the direction of Ms B. Davis. Thank you, one and all. There are active mid-week groups, such as Brownies, Girl Guides, Pathfinders, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Thank you to the leaders reporting special events through the year. These young people are really being taught how to cope with life, and develop healthy competition by means of earning their badges. In May and July, there were exchange visits with similar groups from Pennsylvania. The Girl Guides ended the year with a Christmas Party at Donna Bryant's house on December 10th. The Grandview Home and School Association wishes to express their thanks for the support they received in 1986. We look forward to continued success with our program in 1987 and beyond. With great pleasure and warmest regards we extend wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous and Happy New Year to one and all. Several families and couples were afflicted with the travel bug this summer, Many went west to attend Expo, among them your correspondent correspondent and her husband. Alex Joncas was away in New Bruswick for nine days seeing relatives and having a good feed of lobster and codfish. It makes one's mouth water if you have an appetite for seafood. His youngest sister from Quebec joined him and the trip was very much enjoyed by both of them. There were 150 new boxes added to the Post Office lobby this summer. The postmaster is quite happy to see this addition as there has been a long waiting list for a period of time. Rabies vaccination became compulsory for all dogs and cats in Victoria County on September 1st. A clinic was conducted for the convenience of those whose pets were not under a regular veterinarian's care. The Kcenagers have had interesting times through the year. Anyone fifty-five years and older, and younger spouses, are eligible to become members. They take trips and regularly enjoy socializing over tables of euchre. There is also a draw for two lucky winners. On Thursday, July 3rd, Kcenagers and guests gathered especially to wish all the best to Grace Fallis on her move to Lindsay and presented a wallet special to the occasion and some money. The new Secretary-Treasurer is Ruth Richardson and Harold Moore the now President. The Kcenagers hold their Christmas banquet out at the Oasis. There were fifty present and the meal was very much enjoyed.
