The Ministry Ministry of Tourism and Recreation for the Province of Ontario Ontario selected the City of Etobicoke to host the selection of Ontario's Team for the 1987 Canada Games. Approx 7 imately 350 athletes will attend. SWIM MEET -- Ten members of the Newcastle Aquatics Aquatics Club attended a swim meet in Pickering on Saturday, Saturday, January 3 and 4, with a total of 187 swimmers representing nine clubs. Collin Taggart opened the scoring at the 6:02 mark of the opening period, assisted by Gary Adams and defenceman Jason Crosbie. Ryan Robinson scored the second goal, unassisted. unassisted. Richard Bateman picked up the third Toro goal assisted by Jeff Murphy and Crosbie. Defenceman Sean Brown made a tremendous solo rush up ice for the fourth Bowmanville goal. They played Trenton in a 7-2 victory, Stirling (who at that point hadn't lost all year) to a very exciting 5-4 win, and Belleville 5-2 for the championship. All the boys played super. Defence played solidly all three games. Derek Lange could not make it due to illness so Jason Jeffreys, a forward, filled the hole for Derek and played very well. The forwards were helping the defence and scored when they had the chance. Our goalie Byson Harnum and Ryan Stainton played steady and strong, 1st game - Greg McMurter with the hat trick plus 2 assists; Chris Heino 2 goals and 3 assists; Jason Jackman 1 goal and 3 assists; Andrew Ferguson 1 flgoal; Mark McCarthy amj 'Mike Deblois each had 1 assist. The game's M.V.P. was Jason Jackman. 2nd game - Jackman 2 goals, one assist; Heino 1 goal and 1 assist; McMurter 1 goal and 1 assist; Ferguson 1 goal; 2 assists to David Watt and Brent Strand with singles to Paul Goff and McCarthy. Ryan Ferguson scored the sixth Bowmanville goal, with the play being set up by Ryan Robinson and "Chuck" Carr on one of the prettiest passing plays seen in a long while. The host club closed out the scoring at the 3:02 mark. Steve Oke was in goal for the Toros, earning the victory. Young Canada Day The Canadian Tire lads took part in the annual Young Canada Day by inviting a strong 'dub "AA" Thornhill Atoms. The visitors scored after less than two minutes had elapsed in the game, the only goal of the period. Jason Crosbie evened the count on a blistering shot from the blueline, assisted by Sean Brown and "Chuck" Carr. Jeff Murphy scored the game-winner on a nifty play engineered by his centreman Richard Bateman. "Chuck" Carr scored the insurance marker with 3:18 remaining in the game, with the assists going to his wingers Ryan Ferguson and Ryan Robinson. Steve Oke was in goal for the Toros and was full value for the win. Tire Atoms Handed Setback ■ The Bowmanville Major Atoms paid a visit to Port Hope on December 16th and were handed a 2-1 setback at the hands of the host club. The - Toros opened the r scoring after less- than' two' " minutes had elapsed in' the game 1 with Steve Deblois scoring, assisted by Ryan Ferguson and Ryan Robinson. Port Hope scored once in the second and third periods for their margin of victory. The Toros were without the services of "Chuck" Carr for the game and perhaps the Bowmanville làds were a little over-confident after having thrashed the Port Hope club a few days earlier in the Cobourg tournament, but the Port Hope club was full valüe for their win. :i SELLING OUT OF ALL FALL AND WINTER MERCHANDISE Kool Beats Newcastle Sunday, Dec. 28th saw Kool Enterprises Bantams meet the Newcastle Bantam team for the second time in 6 days and come away with their second one goal victory. Kool were missing 4 regular players for this game and wish to thank Dustin Couch and Jeremy Snowden who helped out and played well. The game was a very hard hitting affair featuring several fine checks and a large number of questionable checks. Fast action and fine 'goaltending also featured strongly with the game remaining scoreless until Jeremy Snowden, reunited with Billy MacIntyre, banked the opening goal in off the post, Andrew Day also assisted on Jay's marker. Newcastle tied the game on a power play then the goaltenders took over. Good saves were recorded at both ends with Dave Killens forced to make his best save off an errant clearing pass by his own defence. With less than 2 minutes remaining, Billy was stopped after a fine rush then Steve Bizi hit the post. Finally, Steve was able to get the puck in a scramble and put it high Into the net. Billy MacIntyre and Dusty Couch assisted on the winner. This was Kool's final game of 1986 and they ended the year with a 12-3-2 record. Bradley St. John's bid for a shut-out ended as Scott Mackay scored on his own rebound with ten seconds left. Kris Policy was n star in this game, Despite the score, two brenk-nwnys by Erik Griffin, one by Craig Sabine, two by Chris Pot, three by Niki Defrcltns and one by Brian Ball were all stopped by Kris, Jeff Finney and Chris Paquette were at their best on defense.
