Year by year, the Board of Directors, the Administrator and her assistants have been striving to up-grade the quality of the art and craft courses and workshops that have been offered for the last ten years at the Visual Arts Centre. Starting at the beginning of this month, Denise Vanson has assumed the role of Administrator, replacing Elfriede Hauns- bérger, who has retired after holding that position for the past eight years. Marla Rosenberg, Co-ordinator, continues in her role of able assistant. With the support of volunteers, programmes are prepared and exhibitions planned and carried through. The results have proven to be an overwhelming success. Residents of the town of Newcastle can be justifiably proud of this facility which we call the VAC. The proposed program of classes in Fine Arts and crafts for the winter of 1987 has been finalized. Denise and Marla and company are making all the last-minute preparations and bracing themselves for the anticipated surge of registrations for classes. Registration dates and times are as follows:Between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. Monday to Friday January 19th to 23rd and 26th to 30th. Evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Monday January 19th and 26 th; Wednesday, January 21sLand 28th. In addition to the extensive variety of courses which are normally being offered, there have been several exciting new classes added to this year's schedule. Carol Reynolds will be introducing a 'Tecnniques of Landscape Painting on Monday mornings. This is in addition to her established Portraiture class and her Life Drawing class, also held on Mondays. On Tuesday evenings, Jim Paget is offering a new class in Drawing for the serious student. For the past two years Jim's Painting-All Media course has enjoyed a high level of attendance. That class will again be held on Tuesday afternoons. Also new on Tuesday evenings, will be a class in Stained Glass/ Lampmaking to be instructed by Sharon Edey. New on Wednesdays there is to be a class of instruction in Rug Hooking to be given by Shelagh Knonpka. Starting dates for these VAC classes vary considerably. Exact information may be obtained by contacting the VAC staff. 623-5831. The Third Annual Juried Exhibition of Crafts, entitled Winter's Harvest, will open at 2:00 p.m. January 25th, 1987 with no charge for admission. This is a stimulating show of works created in a variety of materials; textiles, metal, leather, clay and wood. In addition, this year the Mill is fortunate to have a display of antique quilts which are on loan from the Bowmanville Museum. The show will run until February 8th, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. daily. A welcome is being extended to anyone who wishes to come to the Milk to meet with friends or make some new ones at noon on Mondays and Tuesdays, starting February 9th. Films will be shown from 12:10 to 12:50 on these days. You are asked to bring a brown bag lunch. Tea and coffee will be available and these films will be shown free of charge. Come see! Finally, the Annual General meeting and Election of Officers for the VAC will be held at the Mill at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 15th. Although the meeting will be open for attendance by members or anyone wishing to join, it is requested that anyone planning to attend would phone and inform the staff by calling 623-5831. by Les Jones Mr. and Mrs. Reid Wood were dinner guests on Sunday Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Ray Challice of Canon.
