4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, January 14,1987 Section Two Y elverton Miss Candy Malcolm is enjoying a few days off from her duties at Jonik Towers in Toronto and is spending them with her family, the Howard and Terry Malcolms. Mrs. Nancy Stinson and other members of her immediate family are pleased to have a visit from their father Mr. Dan Gould of New Brunswick between Xmas and New Years. Mr. and Mrs. Art Rowan entertained (or vice-versa) their grandson Kendal Baker during the Xmas holiday. Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Brian (Carol) Gray in the recent passing of her grandmother, Ethel- May Wotten at the ripe old age of 93. In the recent account of the passing of Mr. Joe Hurtig which was written prior to the funeral, we neglected to mention a couple of items of interest. Rev. John Evans based his remarks on the theme taken from Ecclesiastic Chapter 3 - a scripture selected by the family. Expanding on this he brought an appropriate message of comfort to the bereaved. The Pallbearers were his son, his grandsons and close family members. Mr. Hurtig was a valued member of our Yelverton community who was recognized for his honesty, sincerely and forthright manner. Having imigrated from behind the Iron Curtain, hé' was familiar with the agonies of war and its deprivations. Until failing health curtailed his activities, he was a hard working individual and taught his family by example, setting modest but realistic goals for attainment. The sorrow of the family, his wife Ida, daughters Inge and Eva, and son Ron, grandchildren and close friends will, we trust, be alleviated by the. knowledge that his loss will be shared by many others. Certain members of the Robinson family enjoyed (we presume) a recent presentation of the Nut Cracker Suite at the O'Keefe Centre in Toronto between Christmas and New Year's. The vivacious activities of a group of emaciated flat chested females tip-toeing thru the tulips in concert with a group of fairy-nice male dancers in skin tight body suits cavorting across the stage, carries little appeal to otir admitted 'Tow-brow" terpsichard tastes we admit.- Hope Ernestene didn't get too turned on by their animal antics.!! Congratulations to Manvers Township Atoms who won top position in the recent tournament at Douro rink. Teams played included Baltimore and Barrie with their final successful game vs St. James Peterborough by a score of 8-3. Local Yelverton players on the team were Dwayne Glasbergen and Todd Malcolm. Well done lads ! New Year's day was ushered in with the usual gusts in this community as elsewhere with the only known casualties the occasional "sinus" problem induced by a too rapid transfer from New Year's Eve "high" to the grim reality of a 1987 "low" - a purely atmospheric condition of course. A number of house parties were indulged in throughtout the area - skidoo parties, skiing parties at Bethany etc. ad infinitum. Possibly the event that drew the largest attendance and the one your scribe the most familiar with, was the one held at the Manvers Township arena. Every nook and cranny of the auditorium was filled with revellers 99% of whom were in a happy holiday mood. Those who arranged the event arc to be commended for a well planned affair. Everything possible was done to make those in attendance enjoy themselves - which included scurrying around for extra tables and chairs for those of us who are habitually late. The choice of having Warren Sutcliffe and his group provide the music for the dance proved excellent. Warren with his "basso- profundo" voice as M.C. and vocalist did an fine job in keeping the party moving - even if he and the boys could play any Randy Travis number. Un the other hand, to inject a puny pun, the music catered to everyones taste varying from those hippidity - hop numbers so enjoyed by the younger set to some decent ballroom dancing for we (ugh!) senior citizens. It was also a pleasure to hear Yelverton's silver haired soprano Gray Bristow provide a few numbers which were well read. Too bad Gary wouldn't take his musical talents out of mothballs and get back into the musical game. He has too much talent to be sitting on his "assets". Jane, Marte and Dionne Malcolm of Omemee entertained their immediate family on New Year's day to a sumptuous turkey dinner. Those present included Mrs. Austin, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Connolly of Bobcaygeon, Mrs. Norma Skinkle and family of Campbellford, Ronnie Sharman of Lindsay, Mona Malcolm of Ajax and Corrie and Harvey Malcolm. The fire that destroyed the Dupont Plaza Hotel, San Juan, Puerto Rico, this week and killed some 60 residents or more gave your scribe and wife Corrie a goodly assortment of goosebumps this week. For a very good reason we believe for it was,at this hotel we enjoyed a very enjoyable one week vacation two years ago following a Caribbean cruise. We were located on the 11th floor overlooking the pool, about % way up the 20 floor building. The restaurant and very large casino were located on the ground floor where the fire apparently started. A door opened and a little green person from Mars stood there. He ran but the green person ran too. The green person got him and took him in his flying saucer and took off to the planet Mars. The next day some of friends were looking for him. Kevin said, "Where is Shawn?" "I don't know," said Brian. "What is this?" said Kevin. "It's footprints! Let's follow them!" "Look!" said Brian, "There's the end of the footsteps. They must have gone!" Junior Leadership Update by Sarah Black The Junior Leadership Club is finishing up King's Court dodgeball. Soon the primary children will also take part in a houseleague program. In February we will also look forward to a Spirit Day.
