FLASHBACK--10 YEARS AGO -- Shortly after noon on New Year's Day six members of the Subaquanauts Diving Club showed up at East Beach Bowmanville for a swim in Lake Ontario. The temperature was hovering hovering around zero, and even in their wet suits the divers divers were cold, but brave, staying in the water 10 minutes minutes each. They are Chris Phethean, Tony Willans, Bowmanville; Jeff Carey, Courtice; Andy Nozdryn, Newcastle; Bob Smith, Oshawa; and Keith Bailey, Whitby. REDMEN--The Bowmanville Senior Redmen Basketball Basketball team is scheduled to resume play at BHS on Tuesday, Tuesday, January 27. On this date, they will meet with Central Central at 4:00 p.m. And on Thursday, January 29, the Redmen will be visitors at North Toronto Cl. Game time has not been announced. JUNIOR C -- The Bowmanville Eagles are travelling to Lindsay on Friday, January 23, for an 8:30 p.m. game. On Sunday, January 25, the Eagles arc scheduled to play in Lakefield. They will take on the Chiefs at 8:00 p.m. And on Tuesday, January 27, Bowmanville will be at home to Ajax Axemen. Wally McKay had a pair for Shoppers who now trail second place Twin Brand by 5 points heading into the final 4 games of the schedule. R.J. Hall, making an unexpected start in goal for Clinic, also anchored the Twin Brand club to a 4-3 win over Toby's in game two. Hall kicked out 25 of 28 Toby shots, many from close in, to preserve the win for Twin Brand. Doug Rickard fired two goals to move him to within one point short of fifty on the season. Ron Wheeler had a pair for Toby's. Trailing 3-0 late in the second period, TJ's came back to score 4 in a row to ensure themselves of at least a tie for top spot in the Burke division by downing Hanc's 4-3 Sunday at seven. Barry Hazelton, Jim Sutherland, Brian Ferguson and Mike Dymarski with the winner provided Don Bracey with his twelfth win of the season tops in the league. Dave Forrester recorded the shutout as Courtice snapped the Flying Dutchman's modest undefeated streak at two games with a 3-0 win in Sunday's final matchup. A1 Junkin had 2 including the game winner and John Talotti the other for Courtice who now trail Hanc's chickens by a single point in the Oliver loop. Opening Opening day was Sunday, January 4. Racing will continue every Sunday in January, February, and March beginning beginning at 1:00 p.m. TOROS -- In the B.M.H.A., the Novice Toros are the only division with regular season games unfinished. On Friday, January 23, Bowmanville is scheduled to meet with Cobourg as visitors. And on Saturday, January 24, the Novice division will be wrapped up when Bowmanville Bowmanville plays at home (Darlington Arena), again with Cobourg. Game time is 1:00 p.m. DANCE -- The House League Hockey Mothers are holding holding a dance on Saturday, January 24, at the Newcastle Town Hall. Tickets are now available. FREE SKATING -- The Bowmanville Optimist Club is sponsoring several free public skating sessions at the Bowmanville Arena. An hour of skating (4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.) may be enjoyed at no charge on January 26, February February 2, 9,16, and 23. These 11 men faced over eight hours of bitter cold to participate in the annual Snow-Pitch Tournament held on Saturday, January 17, at Memorial Park. In the final championship match the Goodyear team beat out Pickering 15-5. The only qualification for entering the tournament was a willingness to play in the cold and the snow. The Bell girls played well, and really gave the Keene team a run for their money. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, they came out on the short end of a 3-1 score. The Toro goal came off the stick of Joanna Hall with the assistance assistance of Laura Abrams and Lisa Morrison. The Bell Girls travelled to Marmora on Sunday, December December 28th to do battle with their hostesses, and battle they did. Manners and lady-like behaviour were not a priority with the Marmora girls, as their rather aggressive actions were not too popular with the Bell bunch. The Bell group overcame the difficulties difficulties with hard work and determination and earned a 2-2 tie. Joanna Hall and Laura Abrams each scored an unassisted goal for the Bell Toros. The Bell Bombers participated participated in a 2-day tournament in Grafton on December 29th and 30th, and played some very excellent hockey. Their first game on the 29th was against Cobourg, who had defeated the Bell girls on 2 previous occasions by scores of 7-3 and 7-1. The Cobourg girls got quite a surprise, as the Bell bunch stayed even and at times ahead of them. A bit of a lapse early in the 3rd caused the Bell girls to lose their 4-3 lead, but they persevered persevered and came back with a 5th goal to tie the score,which is how the game ended. Joanna Hall led the way with a hattrick and 1 assist, while Laura Abrams and Cheryl Cole had 1 goal each. Lisa Morrison Morrison notched 3 assists and Kim Duczmalcwski earned 1 assist. The 2nd game, also played on December 29th, was against Trenton. The girls weren't quite as sharp as they had been earlier in the day and consequently went down to a disappointing disappointing 3-2 defeat which put them into the "B" Division. Laura Abrams was the only marks person for the Bell Toros as she notched both goals. Assists were tallied for Tricia Ferguson, Sarah Ewles, Karen Robinson and Leanne Floyd. ~ The stage was now set for the "B" Championship on December 30th against none other than Cobourg. The Bell Bombers were not to be denied as they played their best game of the tournament. tournament. Cobourg could not launch any defense to speak of and were very hard pressed pressed defensively, as the Bell Toros dominated every aspect aspect of the game. The Bell Peewees invited the girls from Newcastle to participate at Young Canada Canada Day on Saturday, January January 3rd. A l-l.:tie between the teams actually resulted in a loss to the Bell group, as Newcastle scored the 1st goal. Even though Newcastle Newcastle ranks were depleted considerably this contest was still a boost for the Bell bunch as they lost their very first game of the year to Newcastle by a score of 9-2. The Bell goal was scored by Joanna Hall on a set-up by Laura Abrams. The Most Valuable Player Award was presented to Angie Taylor, and deservedly so, as she was very impressive while performing her net-minding net-minding duties. Defensively, the Bell girls held Keene to only 3 goals as they did in their first encounter, encounter, but offensively, they were lacking and failed to light the scoreboard at all.
