4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, January 28,1987 Section Two Tyrone and Area, fry Bessie Vaneyk Tyrone United Church Women held their January 1987 meeting in the old Tyrone Bible Christian Church, the home of Mrs. Edna Philp and Miss Jean Philp. This meeting starts a year of commemoration in Tyrone; it is nearly one hundred years since the first known woman's organization, the Ladies Aid, was formed in Tyrone Methodist Church in February, 1887. "The following were appointed as officers: Pres. Mrs. Kenner, Vice Pres. Mrs. W. Clemens, Sec. Mrs. Creeper, Treas. Mrs. P. Werry." says the Statesman of February 23, 1887. About three years previously in the union of Methodist Churches the Bible Christian Church and the Canada Wesleyan Methodist Church in Tyrone joined into one congregation and chose the Wesleyan Methodist building of worship. The Bible Christian , Church was remodelled into a parsonage which purpose it served until a new parsonage was built about 1944. When another church union took place in 1925, producing the United Church of Canada, the Ladies' Aid organization became known as the Women's Association, or WA. Through the years since 1816 many women across Canada also belonged to the Woman's Missionary Society of their church. In 1962 the WA and WMS amalgamated to form the United Church Women, ; UCW. The 25th Anniversary of UCW is being celebrated in 1987 throughout the United Church of Canada. Mrs. Edna Philp and Miss Jean Philp were hostesses to a good turn-out of United Church Women on Wednesday evening, January 14, 1987, in their historic home. The committee in charge of the meeting, Marg Knowlton and Bèssie Vaneyk described the significance of the new 25th Anniversary UCW lamp logo by building it symbol by symbol. Some history of the Bible Christian Church and its people was related by Bessie Vaneyk. A more complete account of the meeting by Blanche Jones, Press Secretary, may be found in the Statesman. The new brick Bible Christian Church of 1869 replaced a frame building. Described as "20 feet from floor to ceiling, it (the brick church) was erected by Mr. Thomas Bowden, of Bowmanville, and has been built in a manner reflecting credit on the workmen engaged." A new Wesleyan Methodist Church was completed and opened in Tyrone only a few weeks earlier, Decembèr 30,1968. Mayor Winters At Annual Meeting Town of Newcastle Mayor, John Winters, was among the few people who attended the Annual Meeting of the Tyrone Community Centre Board on Sunday evening, January 11, 1987. Interest is so lacking in the community that some phone calls were made and the meeting time was delayed in order to establish a quorum. Mayor John Winters was given the opportunity to address the group when the meeting eventually got under way. The nominating committee presented a slate of board members whose positions will be determined at the Board meeting in the coming week. Social Congratulations to Clinton Bigelow who will observe his 83rd birthday on January 22, 1987. Clinton enjoys a visit with friends and neighbours who find him a cheerful conversationalist. Happy Birthday, Clinton. Mrs. Earla Bundle and Mrs. Bessie Vaneyk attended the UCW January Workshop at Courtice United Church on January 13th, 1987. We are pleased to know that Mrs. Cecile Bowers has returned home from hospital. Leaders are needed for the winter 4H unit, "Surviving With Style" for youth 12 to 21 years of age.
