The winners were: Charlotte Thompson and Audrey Stephens from Port Hope with seven straight wins, Nancy Gordon and Linda Grey from Marmora in second with six wins, George Read and Tom Pearson from Bowmanville in third with six wins, Helen Balson and Harold Balson from Bowmanville in fourth with six wins, I. Whitney and M. Gibbs from Bowmanville in fifth with six wins and Marg Perris and Dot Fair from Bowmanville in sixth with five wins. The draw prize of a wine cask was won by Doreen Park of Tyrone. Pontypool Happenings by Nettie Aiken On Friday, March 6th, Dorothy Dewar, Sue Kucher, Ruth Richardson and Marie Finney attended the World Day of Prayer meeting in Bethany United Church, It was an interesting service. There was special music from two local Bethany women, and also a decorated cake made especially to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer service. Also on Friday, March 6th, Ken Benford lost control of his van near the pond, but the response of the neighbors and the occupants of the following vehicle and their quick action saved him from more serious injuries. We all wish him a speedy recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Ken Benford are pleased to announce the engagement of her youngest daughter, Tina Marie Ward, to Steven Bradley Gilbert, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Gilbert, Oakville. In her service on Sunday, March 8th, Rev. Heather Smith told a story to the .children about temptation, by using cookies as an 1 illustration of how we can be ■ tempted to eat more than we should and that one can be tempted to do so many other things that are not always right. In her sermon, she told about how Jesus was tempted so many times and of all the ways that this made things hard to be true to his Heavenly Father, or how we can be tempted by the way others act towards, us. A surprise luncheon guest on Sunday with your correspondent correspondent and her husband was Mr. Joe Leguire. He did work iand other business for Tom's dad on the farm and wanted to 'find out how he was now. Mr. Leguire has sihce moved from his Bailieboro home to take up Residence in Red Deer, 'Alberta. Tom showed him around the subdivisions, both north and south, in Pontypool. Gwen Raper was the high bowler on Monday, March 9th. She had a high single score of 208 and a high double score of 415. The Strike Fund was. unclaimed this week. There will be bowling at the start of the March Break but some ladies have bowled off. Friday, March 20th is going to be an exciting day in Pontypool. Both Dagg's Variety Shop and Christine's Restaurant are due to have official openings that afternoon. Bob Brown and the Council will be involved. The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at Dagg's at 2:00 p.m., with the ceremony repeated later at Christine's Restaurant, Best wishes to both enterprises. How about a sign on the highway pointing the way into town? March Break will mean that children are carefree to some extent in their play. Everyone will need to be cautious in order to save a tragedy from happening. One hazard is fast running streams. Let us have a safe week. Drivers, the children should be on your mind also. Looking ahead to April 10th, the 2nd Annual Pollock and Music Variety night will take place nt the Pontypool Community Centre. On Wednesday evening the U.C.W. unit II met at Mr. and Mrs. J. Peacock's home. Mrs. Peacock opened the meeting with a hymn followed by a talk on what the twenty-first century may be like. Some of the topics touched on were: population, changes in education, breakdown of morality and peace. Mrs. Trew, President took over the business part and Mrs. H. White read the minutes of the last meeting in the absence of Mrs. Quantrill. A luncheon was planned which we have been asked to cater for on the 19th at Vincent Massey Arena. Lunch was served. Church service was held as usual. The choir sang, Rev. Sedgwick had questions for the juniors all about Ash Wednesday, finally ending with another question for next Sunday. A good crowd attended the St. Patrick's Day dance held at Newtonville community hall on Saturday evening with proceeds going to the Newtonville Manse Fund. The watercolor painting made and ' donated by Mr. Ron Phillips was won by Mr, Morley Robinson. On Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Isabelle Trim attended the 90th birthday party in honor of Mrs. Sadie Hamilton of Orono and held at the Odd Fellows Hall in Orono. Mr. and Mrs. George Walton, Robert and Douglas of Newcastle visited Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Farrow. On Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Rowe and Tiffany of Bowmanville were noon dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Trim. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Caswell visited Sunday afternoon with Mrs. Jeanette Layng and Dyana. The children returned to Starkville with Joan and John to spend the March break with their grandparents. There was a good attendance at Shiloh United church on Sunday for services. The sacrament of communion was served by Rev. Bryan Ransom. On Sunday afternoon, Mr. Jim Hallowell visited with his niece and her husband Mr, and Mrs. Gary Higgins, Mary, Sarah and Maia. Jamie Marie Burley, 6, will be competing in the International Sunburst beauty contest in Toronto this July after winning Miss Photogenic and first runner-up in a beauty contest at the Oshawa Centre on Mar. 10. The international event, held on July 17 and 18| will be at the Cara Inn. Booklet (which will be delivered to you soon) and collect points which later can be turned in by the U.C.W. for money. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. E. Fowler had the family for dinner at the ski shack. Most of the family along with Mr. and Mrs. McMurray attended. Mrs. Lottie White celebrated her 85th birthday this week. Mrs. Grace White took Lottie out for dinner on her birthday Thursday at the Legion. Miss Noreen Prouse entertained Lottie and Clara Sheppard who also had a birthday this week and her sister Mary, one evening this week.
