Spring flowers flowers nodded on each lonely table, reluctant to acknowledge acknowledge that indeed they had been forced with false hope to herald Spring's arrival, and to whom? For behind the intermittent chit-chat and hopeful gaiety of the committee of United Church Women who were ready to "pour", to serve and to clean up, could be heard the swish of wind and the swirl of winter's last blast of snow. Finally the storm abated, but in time for only a couple of visitors to join the hostesses in birthday cake and tea. The plans and the lovely setting were created by Earla Run- dle, Arlene Rowan and Jaqueline Vaneyk. Birthday Birthday cake will be served at the next meeting of Tyrone UCW. Euchre There were sixteen tables of euchre in play at the Community Centre on Friday Friday evening, April 3, 1987, with the following results: Clara Nesbitt, Agnes Schof- field, Meta Swain, Jean Mahaffy, Rose Griffin, Bill Mahaffy, Ladies' Low - Alice Beech, Men's Low - Adam Sharp. 50-50 Draw - Jean Mahaffy, John Schoonderbeek. Special Prizes - Laverne Clemens, Albert Watts, Edgar Millson, Ruby Malley, WOMEN TEACHERS By Mrs. Jean Milkie The South Durham Branch of Ontario Association Association of Superannuated Women Teachers held their November meeting at the Pickering United Church, November 26,1986. A delicious turkey dinner was served to approximately approximately 85 members. New members were welcomed and each presented with a rose corsage. A most enlightening talk, given by Joan Hill of her many travels with humorous humorous anecdotes, was the highlight of the afternoon. Frances McLeod and Margaret Patterson were each given a certificate of recognition of their many services to Durham South Branch of O.A.S.W. The Provincial Conference Conference will be held in Sudbury Sudbury June 9, 10 and 11,1987. Betty Blaker, provincial delegate, and Audrey Keyes, branch delegate, will be attending while Christine Lamb will be the alternate delegate if necessary. necessary. President Lois Yellow- lees conducted a short business business meeting announcing the date of the next dinner meeting to be held May 6, 1987, 12:15 at the Kedron United Church. Mrs. Ruth Tink will be guest speaker on flower arrangement arrangement and care. CHURCH Rev. David McKinnell has delivered a fine series of sermons during this Lenten season. On Sunday, April 5th "Face it and Live", dealt with the many areas of death we may face in our lives. "Death, spiritual and physical, needs to be confronted". confronted". The choir's ministry ministry of music was "Open the Gates of the Temple"; it was interesting and effective. Tyrone Church Outreach Committee sponsored an event on the subject of alcohol alcohol and drug abuse on Sunday evening, April 5lh. The evening involved those attending in the form and context of an Alcoholics Anonymous/Al Anon/ A1 Ateen meeting. Discussion followed the viewing of two films. The evening proved very informative and interesting interesting for the folks who turned out in fairly good numbers. Does It Meet Your Needs? A special congregational meeting will be held on April 12th following the' church service to decide whether to keep the public address system being tried in the church recently. The UCW catering committee committee is very grateful for the food and for the help of men and women in the morning and evening for the large catering of April 4th. Visitors Mrs. Doris Baker spent Sunday with her daughter, Jean and Keith Goble, and family, Janelville, Ont. Mrs. Hazel Smith, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, visited Miss Grace Smith, Long Sault, on Sunday. TYRONE 4-H NEWS Meeting # 5 Inspector Kare Full reporting reporting from inside the Tyrone Sunday School where Tyrone Safety Teens held their 4-H meeting on Monday, Mar. 9, 1987 at 7 p.m. This meeting was entitled, entitled, Keeping Your House in Order. President Rachel Patrick opened the meeting with the 4-H pledge and roll call. Secretary Faith Benschop read the minutes which were approved as read. Before the meeting was handed over to the leaders, members discussed discussed ideas for the skit at Achievement Program which is going to be Thurs., April 23, at Kirby Public School. A donation from Bowmanville Institute was gratefully acknowledged. Members and leaders filled in blanks of meeting five and discussed how you keep ahead of drudgery of housework. Some points we picked up were - clean as you work, work smarter not harder, and disorder makes more work. Members then reviewed how to wash dishes, dishes, clean out a refrigerator, refrigerator, how to make a bed properly, vacuuming and kitchen safety. The leaders reviewed home activities, activities, members further discussed the skit. The meeting was adjourned at 9 p.m. Meeting # 6 Inspector- Kare Full, reporting reporting on the sixth 4-H meeting for the Tyrone Safety Teens which was held at the Pleasance home on March 16, at 1:30 p.m. President Rachel Patrick opened the meeting with the pledge and roll call. Secretary Faith Benschop read the minutes which were approved as read. This meeting was entitled - Getting Around which pertained to different types of transportation, from car, bus, train, subway to airplane. Members were asked to go outside where Mr. Pleasance Pleasance showed us various components of a car and instructed instructed us on how to check various fluid levels and belt tension. We also participated participated in changing a tire. Members then continued their meeting in the house by answering questions about different modes of transportation. Youth leader, Faith Benschop asked us to pretend pretend we were going on a trip to the Eaton's Centre. We were divided into groups; each group could choose their method of transportation transportation to get to the Centre. We had to list costs involved, advantages and disadvantages disadvantages of our ride to Eaton's. As members enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies, we showed our Coat of Arms we made a couple of weeks ago and discussed them. Rachel Patrick and Cheryl Lepard were each awarded a pen with their name engraved on it for completing six homomaking homomaking units.
