"Hardiness is a term most commonly associated with the ability of a plant to survive survive out-of-doors over winter," says Master Gardener Gardener Bonnie Warner, of RR 3 Englehart, Ont. Master Gardeners are gardening enthusiasts who have received formal horticultural horticultural training through the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Agriculture and Food's Master Gardener program. Once trained, Master Gardeners Gardeners are available to answer answer questions from the public. Your local garden centre can tell you which climate zone you live in. Or you can find the information by checking the Canadian Plant Hardiness Zone Map at your library. This map divides Canada into zones, numbered from zero to nine. The lower numbers indicate indicate colder zones and the higher numbers represent warmer zones. Plant materials are then rated, as to their ability to survive in various zones. For example, a crab apple tree that is rated for zone three will survive in all zones from three to nine. Guelph is located within zone six; Timmins is zone one; Ottawa zone five, North Bay, zone four. A highbush cranberry is rated for zone two; common privet, zone five, showy forsythia, forsythia, zone six. ' From this it is evident that privet cannot be growth too far north of Ottawa, Ottawa, forsythia not much past Guelph. In addition to a plant's genetic ability to survive the winter, there are many other natural and manmade manmade factors that can influence influence plant hardiness. Good snow cover, for example, insulates many low-growing plants from harsh winter winds. And sometimes trees and shrubs can be protected by a man-made windbreak to increase their chances for survival. Chickens On Strike by Sjana Yeo "In the news today, Farmer Brown has announced that the chickens are on strike! Now the big questions are... Will there be an Easter this year? What will the Easter Bunny do? Most important will we ever have green eggs and ham again?" Click. The Easter Bunny turned off the T.V. and said, "Now what will I do? I have to get some eggs. If I don't Easter might be off!" Mrs. Bunny said, "Now don't worry about those eggs! I'm sure the chickens will change their minds and if they don't I will bake some chocolate eggs." "But you can't possibly bake enough eggs for 503,661,437,509 kids," Easter Bunny said. "Well, maybe I'd better get started and you should talk to those chickens!" said Mrs. Bunny. So the Easter Bunny went to Farmer Brown's barn and said, "Now listen up you chickens! There are least 503,661,437,509 kids out there who are depending on Easter. Would you like to see all their sad faces and tell them why there will be no Easter? Well if you do, speak up now ! ' ' Silence. "If you want to help me speak even louder!" "I will," said one. "So will I," said another. "Yeah me too!" they all kept saying. So there was an Easter after all!
