Quintessence Concert Serves Up a Musical Potpourri In the second of three concerts in the St. Paul's Performing Arts Series, 'Quintessence', the very talented five-man ensemble ensemble from Toronto performed performed . at Bowmanville High School on Wednesday April 22. What began with an offbeat offbeat entrance by cellist, Jose Shapero, soon turned Into a musical merry-go- round as the group displayed displayed their talents for jazz, country, swing, contemporary contemporary and classical music. Shapero, whose cello was made in 1714, is trained in both piano and cello perfor mance. His comical behaviour behaviour was a hit as he repeatedly repeatedly tried to play a solo of "The Swan", only to be interrupted interrupted by the other band members wanting to do some jazz. The chief instigator of the impromptu jazz numbers was Bill Bridges. Mr. Bridges, a native of Alberta, is an arranger, composer, and performer with a great sense of humour and timing. timing. Lenny Solomon (violin), Julian Julian Knight (viola) and Anthony Anthony Flint (violin) were all outstanding as they jazzed and hammed it up, slowed it down, and kept the audi ence's toes tapping. Ip the second half, the ensemble ensemble played a tribute to Bowmanville ('the heart of country music'), the theme from "On Golden Pond", "Sophisicaled Ladies" by Duke Ellington, and several pieces featuring a violin and a piano solo. As Mr. Shapero took to the piano for one piece, Mr. Bridges showed his great versatility as he picked up the cello.
