Junior Orioles Begin Spring Training On Sunday, April 12 the Cowan Pontiac, L & L Tool Junior Orioles held their first training camp. The Orioles have already been picked by the media to return as Eastern Ontario Junior "C" Champions and the Orioles are inviting any interested players between the ages of 16-21 to come and try out. The 1986-87 hockey season season is history, but the memories of the accomplishments accomplishments and action will remain forever in the minds of the Midgets, management, management, parents and friends. Regardless of the listing and naming of achievements, the precious moments will never be forgotten. forgotten. The team went to New Liskeard to do their utmost to win it all in the Ontario Tournament of Champions. This was evident by their behaviour, attitude and diligent diligent team effort on the ice last weekend. The ultimate "All Ontario Championship" was won by a 7-6 score over a stubborn North York Canadien team. This was made sweeter by the naming ofScott Webster (goal), Scott Page (defence) and Gareth Stone (right wing) to the all-star team. Each of the other three clubs, Hearst, New Liskeard, Liskeard, North York, placed one each on the prestigious team. The Toros could easily easily have swept the top awards as Glen Campbell and George Pithie received M.V.P. awards over the weekend and the rest of our defence were more than equal to the occasion. The first game was played Friday night against the champions of the north, Hearst Marquis. As usual for our Dutchman crew, it was a slow starting affair with Webster making several several dazzling saves in the first period before Mike Gallant popped one in from Paul Stainton. Each game consisted of three 15 minute periods! j with a flood between between jdàch period. In t h es e c o UfL ,U carst's aggress aggress jyç-,p'l ay, Resulted in a go fi 1, ! j which,' |\y,$s f j o fis e t by ohé off the'stick of Gareth Stone from Campbell', and Rekker. Hearst scored twice in the third but were respectively matched by goals from Gallant Gallant (Page and Fairey) and Pithie (Campbell and Cole). Chris Shymr then opened it up on an excellent pass from Shawn Rekker. Stone potted one in the empty net from Campbell and Pithie but that trio wasn't finished. With Hearst's goaltender back in they hit again on a goal by George Pithie. The second game was on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 against the host club, New Liskeard Lions, who had been defeated 4-3 by North York the previous evening. This was a hard-hitting affair affair with very lenient refereeing refereeing for the most part. The Toros scored first on a blazing slapshot from Mike Colwell with assists going to Tripp and Shmyr. The Lions replied on an equally blazing blazing shot to beat Burke Lush. George Pithie netted a point shot from Campbell and Fairey on the power play but it again was balanced balanced by a New Liskeard goal to finish the first period at 2-2. Mike Gasllant was the marksman in the second from his linemates, Fairey and Stainton. Once again, the northern boys evened it up to complete the second period scoring. Johnny Romano assisted on a Mark Tripp goal which put the Flying Dutchman boys ahead to stay. It was not easy. On a faceoffin our end which resulted in jostling between Tripp and the opposing opposing centre, the head official official saw fit to assess Mark a major for butt-ending much to the amazement of everyone else in the arena. Even those watching directly directly above in the press box had seen nothing take place. That made things tight with four minutes to play and short handed. The O.M.H.A. reps were equal to the task. Once again Gareth Stone proved to be the relentless relentless checker as he and John Romano stole the puck in the offensive zone and notched an insurance marker. Glen Campbell won the face off at our blue line, scoring the final goal of the game to come away with a 6-3 win which ensured a berth in the gold medal game. Burke Lush held the team in with some excellent saves. North York had defeated defeated Hearst 8-3 earlier to also make the gold medal match. However, the Toros had to play North York at 7:00 p.m. as part of the round robin. In the third game, North York struck early on a blast from the point. Scott Page took a pass out from Gareth Stone scoring from the point. Rob Real combined with Troy Harness and Chris Shmyr to give the Toros the lead until the M.T.H.L. winners scored on a,break-away in thé second to tie it up to the end of the second period. The C.P.S. line struck in the third with Glen getting the goal from George and Gareth. The Bowmanville boys added three more, Fairey from Downing and Rekker, Pithie from Stone and Downing and Colwell from Stone and Campbell to close the scoring at 6-2. After a sumptuous breakfast breakfast and a team meeting, it was off to the rink to prove we were the best. Many felt we had already done that but the gold medal game had to be played. New Liskeard Liskeard defeated Hearst 5-3 to win the bronze medal. The North York boys were a stocky crew with two well built lads, one 5'9" and 230 pounds and the other 5'8" at 200 pounds. They were not easy to knock off the puck and as a result were a threat when they had control in our end. The Toros struck early with two goals by the C.P.S. line, George scored one on a timely give and go with Gareth from Glen and Glen scored the second on a tip- in. Jamie Downing scored on a blast from the point on passes from Real and Romano. The first period ended 3-0 for the Toros but these were 20-minutç periods and it was far from over. North York made it 3-1 in the second second but Pithie connected from Stone to make it 4-1. North York capitalized on a break-away to close it 4-2. Chris Shmyr rounded out the scoring in the second from Stone to take a 5-2 lead into the third period. David Fairey tipped in a Shawn Rekker slap shot with Paul Stainton assisting to give the Toros what seemed a safe lead. As the 10 minute mark of the third approached, the Canadiens knew it was do or die and they threw everything but the kitchen sink at our guys, including the odd spear, a 230 pound winger and some flying tackles at Webby in the crease. It paid off for them as they closed the gap to 6-5 with several power blasts from close in. Pithie and Stone hit again, set up by Scott Page to make it 7-5. Even then, the North Toronto Toronto boys wouldn't quit scoring with 32 seconds left, but that was all they had time for and we held on for a 7-6 win, and the right to be truly "All Ontario Champions" Champions" SPLINTERS: The Breault Motor Hotel in New Liskeard Liskeard deserves special mention for showing the utmost utmost of hospitality through their meals, service, accommodation, accommodation, and staff. No one has worked harder harder for this team over the years than Henry Downing. He looked after contacts, ice time, communication, , and thousands, of other ; things : too numerous to mention and I-honestly believe believe this team would not have been as successful without his dynamic energy. Boys and parents, hats off to Henry. Stu Tripp has been extremely extremely patient, supportive and helpful as assistant coach and made many sacrifices sacrifices to help make this year successful. Mr. Brian Taylor has our vote for coach of the year. He got the best out of the boys on the ice and worked with them to overcome all types of adversity. Having no family they have devoted all of their time, attention, and concentration to this team which has paid off. Thanks, Brian and Ginny. It was towards the end of the game that Bowmanville gave up the three goals and Newmarket had to press, allowing the S & G lads more chances.
