"It lakes an incredible amount of dedication," said swim coach, Gord Maxwell. Mr. Maxwell, and Carol Gonder, are the two coaches for the club that has only been in existence since last fall. Since then, the swimmers swimmers have been improving steadily and bettering their times. Coach Maxwell has wanted a swim club for several several years, and late last year it became a reality. All the swimmers start as novices, and by bettering their times, they bring themselves up to higher levels. "Swimming isn't about beating someone else, it's about beating the clock," said Coach Maxwell. It hasn't been an easy road for the club. The first year has been spent trying to build community support and realization of just what it takes to be a swimmer. "Many people don't know how much it really costs," said Mr. Maxwell. "Bathing suits last about six weeks, there is the cost of the pool rental, plus all travelling expenses to meets," Coach Maxwell said. That doesn't include the individual dedication from each swimmer, the early mornings, and after school practices. Practices are generally scheduled around the daily activities at the Newcastle Pool. The club presently competes competes at AAAA Level. The club has participated in many meets this year, and one of the final goals is the Provincial AAAA Championships Championships in Thunder Bay, May 8-10. Coaches Gonder and Maxwell Maxwell are expecting that the club will do quite well in Thunder Bay. "The times have been improving improving all year, and many of the swimmers should place quite well," said Coach Gonder. One more activity for Gord Maxwell is the establishment establishment of an ESSO Swim Canada program. Developed Developed by the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association, Association, the. i program promotes promotes participation and skill development in competitive competitive swimming. It is not a learn-to-swim program but is designed for youths who have some basic swimming ability. The program consists of six achievement levels, for which there are 14 individual individual awards. Speed is not an important aspect to,the program, as only three individual individual achievement levels are time-related. you Qijftl and QteetUufi...
