DBIA Members Discuss Promotion of Downtown The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 13, 1987 15 From Page One west of Bowmanville. He said there are numerous events which could be staged each weekend in Bowmanville and the summer events would be an annual event. "The list is endless and is limited only by your imagination," he said. Yet once the scheme gets rolling, "kids would literally nag their parents parents to take them to Bowmanville." • The delivery was followed by Mr. Purdy's discussion of effective newspaper newspaper advertising for each business. Mr. Purdy, a member of the BIA, admitted he was "somewhat frustrated" frustrated" by the lack of enthusiasm from some merchants during a downtown downtown promotional event. "I honestly think there are a few merchants in this community, as well as others, who don't want their stores to become any busier," Mr. Purdy confessed. Yet he said all stores should want more business because greater revenues revenues reduce overall costs. As for the newspaper's role in the marketing process, Mr. Purdy said "advertising is news" and that an effective effective ad is as well read as a paper's editorial copy. He noted that an effective ad reduces reduces the amount of time a merchant must spend convincing consumers to buy once they have entered the store. Mr. Purdy explained how none of the arguments against newspaper advertising advertising has any merit and he noted that even stores which do not want new customers should advertise to maintain their existing clientele. The speech was logically followed by Mr. Boyes' discussion of effective window advertising. Among the points stressed by Mr. Boyes were that an effective window display must attract the interest of the passing customer, arouse interest, interest, create desire, win the confidence confidence of the customer and lead to a decision to buy. Mr. Boyes noted that the window works the same way that the merchant does inside the store. Mr. Boyes said the average time spent looking at a store window is three seconds and that merchants must work to increase that time. As well, he stressed that window displays should probably be changed each week and that windows must be kept clean. He noted that during a stroll through downtown Bowmanville, he only saw six store windows which were clean. "Your customers are looking through those windows," he said.
