May 13, 1987 21 Chief Karate Instructor Visits Manie Leaf Karate Club MORE BASEBALL NEWS -- A T-ball program for boys and girls aged 5-8, is starting May 13 (tonight) at Ontario Street Public School. There are already approximately 120 children registered for 10 teams and there is still room for more. The program runs Wednesday and Thursday nights with each tëam playing once a week. The league is sponsored by the TONBA, and the Kinsmen Club. For further information about registration, registration, call Terry Donohue, 623-4705. OSHAWA GENERALS TAKE CHAMPIONSHIP -- The Oshawa Generals battled back from a 2-1 deficit in .the final game of the Ontario Hockey League Championships, Championships, to come away with a 5-3 victory over the North Bay Centennials. The Generals have now entered entered the Memorial Cup Tournament, against Medicine Hat and Longueil Chevaliers, which began last Saturday night in Oshawa. LOSSA TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS -- The Lake Ontario Secondary School Association track and field championship finals at Civic Fields in Oshawa gave many Bowmanvillc High School athletes a chance to really show their stuff. Qualifying for this week's DYSSA competitions were: Paul Stonehouse, first, junior 1500 m, first, junior 800 m; Dan Moriarity, first, senior 800 m, third, senior 1500 m; Patrica Lawerence, second, junior 200 m, third, junior 100 m; Rebecca Stewart, third, midget high jump; Janet Myers, fourth, midget discus; girls junior relay, fourth; boys 1600 m relay, fifth. GOLF FOR EASTER SEALS -- Three golf courses in the Town of Newcastle will be among 125 Central Ontario Ontario courses participating in the A1 Balding's Golf Week for Timmy. This event will help to raise money for 7,000 Easter Seal, physically disabled children. Both the Ayren Links, and the Pebblestone Golf Clubs will be participating from May 16-25, and Bowmanvillc Golf Course will be running their event, Thursday, May 21. Any golfer can participate by buying a Timmy score card for $10 (plus green fees if applicable) and may enter as often as he or she likes at $10 a round. The score card represents $2 to the Pro Shop for prizes, and $8 to the Easter Seal Society. J * J Fitness Warehouse Instructors Put BHS Class Through Paces The Newcastle Lakers of the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association Senior Division will open their 1987 season at the Village Park in Newcastle Village on Sunday, May 17th, with Councillor Frank Stapleton of the Newcastle Town Council and Leo Kelly, the former manager of the Lakers, assisting him. Incoming Field Manager John Robinson is confident that the 1987 edition of the Newcastle Lakers will have a winning season. Since the middle of April, the Lakers have been working hard in workouts and Club Officials Joe Werheid, John Robinson and Bud Fanning are pleased with the results from these practices. Holdovers from last year include Doug Rickard, Tim Jenkins, Dan McMullen, Craig Hornby Jeff Fox, Scott Michelson, Joe Werheid, Rob Brushett. Newcomers are Bruce Austin of the Bowrnan- ville Junior team of 1986, Kevin Green a former Oshawa Junior, Rob Terry of the Bowmanville Minor Baseball system, Brad Kelly a former Laker, Brett Foster a former Kendal Eagle. They complete the roster of the Lakers of 1987. Bowmanville High School physical education teacher, Jan Arbuckle, joined in a work-out led by Fitness Warehouse instructors, instructors, Lynn Jones and Laura Thiessen at B.H.S. last week. The grade 11 and 12 phys ed class had been doing a six-part series on aerobics and for their last class they asked instructors from Bowmanville's Fitness Warehouse health club to come and put them through their paces. WAVERLEY PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWS Someone Special Day By KylaQuanduk Waverley had a "Someone Special Day" on May 1st. Some of the kids brought someone special, like grandparents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers and friends. It started started in the afternoon. At noon hour, the Junior Choir entertained entertained them by singing three songs, which they really enjoyed. At recess, the Primary Choir sang to them. The children would lake their someone special and tour them around the school. They took them into their classrooms. classrooms. Grandparents would stay and see what they were doing. Later the children took their someone special into the Health Room for tea and cakes. The Someone Special Day was a big success. Mrs. Puk's Grade Three Class By Crystal Whyte Mrs. Puk's grade three class is doing many interesting interesting things. In math they are working with fractions. They have just started working on metric measurements. In spelling they do weekly work and they have dictation every Friday. In Environmental Studies the children are studying studying weather. Art is a very interesting subject; they have done pencil-shaving sketches of pussy willows and much more. In music they enjoy singing songs about the east coast from the book "Canada Is". So far, I think Mrs. Puk's class has had a wonderful time doing many of the interesting interesting things Mrs. Puk has taught them. Mr. Ralfe's Class By Tracy Moriarity Mr. Ralfe's class is keeping busy this term. In math they have recently had a test on problem solving and arc working on using percents. Every week the teacher assigns work from the Spelling text book to bo done on Thursday. The class Is writing great stories and poems for creative writing, Every day after recess the whole class reads for 35 minutes and then they write nine sentences about the story they rend. Mrs. LnClmnso Is starting to tench the class a now unit In Environmental Studies, The new unit Is "Communication" and everyone everyone has to do a project on a newspaper. Keep working hard class 1 Twelve-year-old Marcia Andrews and Paul Murdock, 7, were the recent win ners of an Ontario karate tournament at the Castle Frank High School.
