Jones Wednesday, May 13th, ladies met in the C.E.B. where Earla Bundle presided over the meeting and opened with a poem from the bulletin - "When the Sunlight Comes" followed by prayer. Earla welcomed the ladies and called on Elsie Roy for the minutes of the April meeting. Correspondence was read from Tim Southwell and Pauline and George Alldread. Elsie thanked those who had sent cards of condolence at the time of her mother's death. Mrs. Edna Philips expressed her thank you for her card. Treasurer's report was given by Jackie Vaneyk. Betty Pascoe asked us to expect a call from herself or Pat Drysdale as they are the nominating committee. Catering was reported on by Ann Pleasance. Bessie Vaneyk gave a short history of the United Church Observer and said she would accept renewals. There are about twenty-three families who subscribe. Earla had found a red balloon with a card attached and brought it along to share the information - it had been started from Adam Beck School in Toronto - in a balloon race, and the note asked for anyone who found it, to please reply back. Bessie had a dove lapel pin that Mrs. Shelly Wright is selling - the money goes toward a worthy cause and these can be purchased at $2. each. Bessie made the motion for the U.C.W. to buy the five pins to resell and had it passed by Marion Hoar. Carried. We need two different months convenors, June and September. Please let executive executive have your names. The church treasurer J. Slemon was asked about finances for the summer months. Betty Pascoe moved the U.C.W. donate a set amount now and if more is needed - okay. Seconded by Ann Pleasance. All agreed. Doreen Park moved we give $25. to the "4H Club" and it was carried. A secret vote was cast for a Life Membership Pin to be given. Jackie Vaneyk had the most votes. The new treasurer is to purchase this for her. The pulpit drape was discussed and Marion Hoar had literature of the symbols, different cloth and prices. Jackie moved we set $200. as the top price we wanted to pay. Meeting was turned over to Jean Slemon and Blanche Jones. Hymn 434, Saviour, like a Shepherd Lead Us, was sung. Blanche read scripture I Samuel, Chapter 1, verses 1-15; chapter 2, verse 26; Luke chapter 2, verse 52. She took the devotional reading from the Devotional Program about Bible Women, Chapter 5 of Hannah, A praying mother. Jean had a reading - "I had the meanest Mother in the World." Then she introduced Ruth McKinnell as our speaker of the evening. She related to us some of her early experiences of growing up in a Presbyterian church. «How like many young adults, she left the church and worked in a Children's Aid Society. She spoke of one special girl who at an early age had gotten into drugs and with some of her family members in Mental Institutions, how she was able to pull herself up out of the situation and make something of her life. Ruth finally decided to go to Immanuel College and henceforth henceforth got her degree as a minister. She married and they went to Saskatchewan and ministered out there and she spoke of some of the native women and their hardships. She related to the devotional given earlier of Hannah and through her message made us see there is much more to being a woman with a real desire to be something for herself if she so chose, beyond the role of wife and mother. Blanche thanked Ruth for coming and speaking to us and then we sang hymn 394, Happy thé Home When God is There.!' Full Slate of Events in Orono The Orono Arena Improvement Improvement and Projects committee is busy making plans for upcoming upcoming fund-raising events. Treat Dad to turkey supper at Orono Arena Community Centre on Father's Day, June 17. Another annual happening is the Beef Barbecue, August 12, held at the spacious grounds of Orono Park and once again we'll be serving hot meals at the Durham Central Agricultural Fair. Proceeds will be put toward the installation of an elevator at the community centre in the near future for better accessibility accessibility for the handicapped. We catered to a banquet recently and appreciate the help and pies given for this occasion. With your help and support in these fund-raising events, we are able to maintain the Orono Arena Community Centre and be proud of our building.
