Dwayne Souch, Smith, Dwayne Treffer Following is a brief history of Newcastle Lions Club which will be celebrating its 40th anniversary on May 23rd, 1987. By Pat Blaker Early in 1947, members of the Bowmanville Lions Club felt that a service club such as theirs would be an asset to Newcastle, so they approached approached somé members of the community to find out their reaction to the idea. Most of the men attending that first meeting in our Community Hall were all in favor of the idea. Some felt that there was no need for such an organization, organization, as it might duplicate services to the needy in the area. Despite the opposition, a motion that the club be formed was made by Ken Stephenson and it was approved. A Slate of Officers was made up, a tentative program was decided upon, and at the next meeting, held in the Elmhurst Hotel, plans were made to have the club chartered. At these early meetings, Lion Nels Osborne was appointed Guiding Lion, and Lion President President Ross Stevens and members of the Bowmanville Lions Club helped to get things organized. Charter Night was held here in this hall on Monday, May. 26, 1947. Charter President Percy' Hate ' receiving the Chartér 1 from District Governor Dr. P.B. Rynard. Of the Charter members present that evening, many have passed on, some moved away from the area, others for reasons of their own decided to resign from the club. We have attempted to contact as many of the former members as possible to have them with us tonight, and if we missed anyone please accept our most sincere apology. We tried our best. To those former members who are in attendance, attendance, may we say how nice it is to have you with us once again. We are particularly proud of our one charter member who has, this evening, completed 40 years in Lionism. Although George Walton was away from the area for a while, he always maintained membership membership in Lionism, and we thank him for his guidance and leadership. To attempt to list all our accomplishments over the past 40 years is almost impossible. impossible. They range from small remembrances to our senior citizens at Christmas all the way up to the swimming swimming pool, helping the arena fund, and to the completion of the latest project - providing a diabetic clinic in the rebuilding rebuilding of the Bowmanville Memorial Hospital. We are so very pleased to acknowledge the assistance and co-operation co-operation received from our Lioness Club who contributed $5,000.00 to the Diabetic Trust Fund. Working together with our Lioness Club to accomplish such a project has been a wonderful happening and we do so hope to be able to continue this relationship with them. It is difficult to put into print our feelings when they presented us with their contribution contribution at their 35th Charter Anniversary one month ago, other than to say "our sincere thanks." What has been accomplished accomplished has been with the full support of the people, of the Village, of Newcastle and surrounding area. ' Without them we could not operate, so may we, at this time, offer them our'sincere thanks, and our promise to continue jto channel our efforts into helping helping our community grow and prosper. Through all our efforts we have many fond memories - the good times we- had working together to complete projects - visits to many conventions - painting the arena - the Centennial Room project - the swimming pool - removing the seats from the community hall - the kids' Christmas parties - the fireworks fireworks - the arena fund - remembering our seniors at Christmas - helping needy families - fixing up the base, ment in the Community Hall the swimming pool walk-a thon - twinning with New castle Lions Club Co. down N Ireland - our own Lion R.B District Governor - getting to know so many Lions both in and out of our own district - Lion friends all over the world of Lionism. On Sunday afternoon, the Newcastle Senior Lakers started their opening game like gangbusters, but Markham came through later to win the event 8 to 5. Here, slugger Tim Jenkins romps home in the first inning after slugging a homer over the fence in right field. Next home game is May 24th at 1:00 p.m. We also have our sad memories - the passing on of our many good friends within our club, we worked with them and we enjoyed their friendship friendship and we miss them. Every one of them contributed so much to our success over the past years. We also miss those men who for reasons of their own decided to leave the club and those who have moved away from the area. They all made their contribution to the success we have had, and we offer them all our most sincere thanks. We now look to the future - may we continue to have the full support of the community so that we may do our part to help those less fortunate. May we never forget our motto -- "We Serve".
