ELMER'S FURNITURE 253 BLOOR ST. E. (At Ritson) OSHAWA 728-3473 SINCE 1963 Providence-Shaw's W.I. The members of Providence-Shaw's W.I. met at the home of Betty Blaker, R. R. 2, Newcastle, on May 19. Lily Boumeester became a new member and Isabelle Elliott joined us from her home in Rosseau, Ontario. Welcome to you both. Three guests were present to hear Betty's daughter, Cathy Blaker, tell us of her work in the Northwest Territories and High Arctic. As an added surprise, Mrs. Mary Hunt, a W.I. member visiting from New Zealand, told us of her branch activities, showed us an interesting craft item, and left a woolly lamb as a remembrance. This must be a first in W.I. history for the greatest aggregate distance travelled to a branch meeting. Thelma Gilbank opened the meeting with a poem called "Nèighbors" which was a tribute to her good neighbor who was present with us. The business proceeded with minutes and treasurer's report by M. Dow. The treasurer's report prompted a motion to donate equal funds to the Red Cross. Simcoe Hall and the Harmonize for Speech Fund, the charity of the Ontario Chapters of S. P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. Territories. Territories. Those who had been there remembered the long summer days and the destruction destruction of the buildings caused by 1000 feet of permafrost. Others added that it is one-third of the area of Canada, the population is about 50,000', that the Mackenzie River, at some points, is three miles wide, there are three national parks, allergies are non-existant, and we must all visit the Prince of Wales Heritage Centre, a magnificent history of native peoples. Marilyn Martin introduced Cathy, telling us she 'had attended Bowmanville High School and had worked as an emergency ward nurse after graduation from East Scarborough General Hospital. Cathy is now employed employed by St. John Ambulance in the Mackenzie zone of N.W.T., as one of a team of four Medivac nurses. Her job is travelling by air, covering one-half million square miles, to access and aid emergency calls from native and Inuit people and then returning with them, if necessary, to a medical facility, usually Yellowknife, where at present there is a 70 bed hospital. She says it's quicker for us to go to Europe than for her more northerly patients to get to a hospital. One doctor and occasionally a specialist do "rounds" of the six nursing stations in the zone, each with a small clinic facility, and one nurse on duty. The majority of cases Cathy sees are infants and children with respiratory problems, premature labour by expectant expectant mothers and accidents. All pregnant women must leave their community for a larger centre four weeks before delivery date. These patients are not always truth- Hon. Allan Lawrence, MP for Durham-Northumberland, said today that federal scientists scientists may have solved the mystery surrounding the decline of the water-weed commonly known as milfoil. For the past 17 years, boaters, swimmers, fishermen fishermen and tourists in the Kawartha Lakes region have been plagued by milfoil, a deep-rooted aquatic plant. Over the past year, Environment Environment Canada's National Water Research Institute had field-tested more than 100 sites in 15 lakes in the Kawartha-Rideau waterways. Results show that an "aquatic caterpillar" which feeds on milfoil, has curtailed the infestation. The centimetre-long transparent transparent caterpillar was first observed in Quebec 60 years ago. Its spread to this area is seen as a natural phenomenon caused by milfoil infestation in lakes. Both milfoil and caterpillar are native to Europe and are believed to have been transplanted accidentally accidentally to North America ful as they do not like to leave. Because of sanitation in these planes, Cathy and her team try to prevent births occurring during flights. Medivac costs millions of dollars a year. It comes under the umbrella of the Health and Welfare Ministry and averages three thousand dollars a flight. C.B.C. filmed Cathy at work called "Focus North." A tape of this program showed her receiving the emergency call, making flight preparations, loading the equipment and enroute to a remote settlement. settlement. Wearing a pager, she is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Weather can delay emergency flights. Even this week it was snowing in Frobisher Bay. Marilyn Martin presented the Motto Health is Wealth. She made the point that we have a responsibility to ourselves ourselves to keep healthy. This meeting certainly combined Citizenship and World Affairs. Lunch and social time followed. P.R.O. Shirley Brown around the turn of the century. Field studies show the decline of milfoil has accelerated accelerated dramatically. It abruptly disappeared from Buckhorn Lake two years ago, for example, and has not returned. returned. In Lake Scugog, milfoil declined significantly last summer and is expected to decline further in 1987. Only time will tell whether the "aquatic caterpillar" is an effective pest-control for water-weed and whether it will benefit other milfoil- infested lakes. Mr. Lawrence said he believes the milfoil decline will have a positive impact on the region's economic and recreational base.
