Head table guests are pictured here, left to right, Past District Governor Brent Rickard and wife Jean, District Governor Bill DeYoung and wife Isabel, Frankford; Past International International Director, guest speaker Bruce Murray and wife Alice, St. Marys; Chairman P.D.D.G. Pat Blak- er and wife Betty, President Roy Hopkins and wife Elma, Lioness President Marilyn Martin and husband husband Alec. The high point of the evening was the presentation presentation of a cheque for $35,000 to the Memorial Hospital, Hospital, Bowmanville, which was raised by the Lions and Lioness Club of Newcastle over a period of about two years. Taking part in the unique presentation presentation that will enable the hospital to establish a diabetes Clinic were, left to right, President Roy Hopkins, Treasurer Ed Majer, Lioness President Marilyn Martin, and representing the hospital foundation, Tom Cowan and Executive Director Richard Elston. There was a special tribute to Bowmanville Lion Nels Osborne who had been delegated as a guiding, light by his club which sponsored the Newcastle venture, Chairman Pat Blaker expressing his thanks, as well. At ngnt is Lion George Walton who was presented with a special award by President Roy Hopkins for being the only charter member member who is still a member of the Newcastle club. He recalled some of the early problems in getting organized and mentioned that there are 1,884 clubs and'53,808 members of Lions in Canada. One section of the large crowd that sat down to a delicious dinner served by the Newcastle United Church Women's group. Note the colorful decorations decorations that added to the occasion. Greetings from the Corporation of the Town of Newcastle were ten dered by Regional Councillor Diane Hamre, P.D.G. Brent lückard introduced the guest speaker and Lion Ron Hope introduced the head table. Music prior to the dinner was provided by the Clarke High School stage band. Chairman Blaker gave some of the background of their twinned Lions Club at Co Down Ireland and presented the unique carved gift they had sent to mark the 40th anniversary. President Hopkins received it. Durham East MPP Sam Curcatz presented provincial plaques of congratulations congratulations to Newcastle Lioness Club on their 35th anniversary and Newcastle Lions on their 40th, the awards being received by Presidents Marlin and Hopkins with Chairman Blaker looking on. Charles Gray on behalf of the Newcastle and District Chamber of Commerce Commerce presented a plaque to President Hopkins. The evening concluded with dancing and recalling many of the entertaining anecdotes guest speaker Bruce Murray had mentioned in his forceful address.
