I 2 The- Canadian Statesman. Bowmanvitlc. May 27,1987 New Regional Headquarters From Page One cated on Rossland Rd. in Whitby. Garnet Watchorn, a representative of Graywood Developments Limited, developers for the Whitby site, believes believes that the site in Whitby would have been a better choice. "I believe that our site is a far better better choice," said Mr. Watchorn in a presentation to regional council last week. "Ours is the only proposal that provides provides benefits for the region in excess of $6 million," he added. The Graywood proposal involved the donation of five acres of land for the regional building and the addition addition to the proposal before council of free parking, similar to that of the Oshawa proposal. Mr. Watchorn believes that he didn't have the same chance to present present a proposal as the City of Oshawa was allowed. Mayor Pilkey offered free parking for the proposed headquarters and Mr. Watchhorn says he was not permitted permitted to do the same. "If I had been asked that same question question I would have offered free parking," parking," he said. Mr. Watchorn also believes that the area around Rossland Road will be expanding in the next few years. "There will be 10,000 people moving moving in here in the next five years, it will be the place to work and the place to live," said Mr. Watchorn. "Durham Region is a dynamic and growing area and the headquarters can be a focus and catalyst for the region," he said. At last Wednesday's meeting, Newcastle Newcastle regional councillors Ann Cowman Cowman and Marie Hubbard voted in favor of the Oshawa site. Mayor John Winters was opposed and Councillor Diane Hamre was absent. Play full-contact chess? Anything to get those muscles moving! May 27 is Participaction Challenge Day, a competition between cities and towns to prove just who has the fittest population. The idea is simple. Just do any physical activity between between 7 AM and 10 PM -- power sleeping doesn't count -- for 15 minutes and call up the Fitness Centre to tell them what you did. And that's all. At the end of the day, the calls will be counted up, and the town with the most physically active active people during the day wins the right to fly its municipal flag in triumph at a competing town's city hall, (in this case, Scugog Township, Ajax or Uxbridge.) Uxbridge.) . (N.B. Blessed with a body that's been rudely compared compared to a large pear, this reporter shall also get into the act by tossing a lacrosse ball around.)
