On Tuesday morning forty- six Newcastle Senior Citizens enjoyed a bus trip to Ottawa. Trilliums were still in flower in the woods along highway 7. At Smiths Falls a tour through theHershey Chocolate factory appealed to many. The aroma was delicious. Each bus passenger was provided with a treat and a booklet telling the story of chocolate and cocoa. A stop at the Rideau Centre for lunch and shopping got the seniors moving again before being transported to the Chimo Hotel. On Wednesday morning, in the downtown area, the travellers went their own ways. We chose to visit the Byward Market area where flowers and fruit and vegetable stands were a picture. A two-hour guided tour in the afternnoon took us to see the residences of the Prime Minister, Governor General, many politicians and in Rockcliffe Park, many homes of ambassadors to Canada, and where a house with four bedrooms could be bought for a million dollars. The guide said Sussex Drive was a Mile of History. One of the buildings on Sussex Drive is the Revenue Building or the Connaught Building, well- named because your money goes in but cannot come oiit! The National Gallery is being rebuilt - all of glass. The War Museum and the Canadian Mint are also on Sussex Drive. The city of Ottawa is truly beautiful with the Gatineau and Rideau Rivers and Rideau Canal flowing into the Ottawa River, 70,000 acres of park with 40 lakes for fishing. The National Capital Commission cares for the parks and the beauty of the city. In Hull the E. B. Eddy plant, built around Chaudière Falls, is noted for its pulp and paper industry, matches and White Swan products. Hull, which is in the province of Quebec, has many new buildings, Museum of Civilization to open in 1989, Omnimax Duplex Cinema and Theatre, City Hall or Maison du Citoyen, Federal Bldg, of ten city blocks with walls one yard thick, Internal Affairs Jules Leger Building. An Important Birthday! Thursday of this past week marked the 150th anniversary of St. George's congregation. In 1837 the twenty-first of May fell on Trinity Sunday. The Rev. A. N. Bethune, then Rectorat Cobourg and later to be Bishop of Toronto, conducted conducted the first service. "The congregation was not less than 400, the number of communicants communicants 16, and the collection in aid of the Travelling Missionary Missionary Fund, five pounds and six shillings." (The Church, June 24, 1837). In October of the next year, the Bishop of Montreal confirmed the first class prepared by the catechist catechist Mr. Thomas Fidler. We can assume there were more communicants from then on. For a short time this church was called Trinity, but by 1846, when a Rectory was built nearby, it was known as St. George's. The next year, ten years after he had built it, Major Wilmot, and his wife Mary Stegmann, deeded St. George's along with 15 surrounding acres to the Rev. T. S. Kennedy, first rector of Darlington and Clarke. The original St. George's was destroyed by fire and replaced in 1859 nearer the village centre by the present church. All that remains of the original site is the beautiful St. George's Cemetery. United Church News On Sunday, May 24th, 1987, Mission Sunday was observed at Newcastle United Church. This type of wrestling is the real thing, not what you see on television. These students are taught the proper way of wrestling. Students Students who are involved practise practise during the lunch hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The real purpose of wrestling with these students was to compete against other schools, but, unfortunately, the_J schools were unable to try their wrestlers wrestlers against ours. Now the instructor, Tim Harrison, will just let the students wrestle one another for sport and fun. Ottawa Update There is one week of school remaining until we board the bus heading towards Ottawa.
