They are both brown liquids but that's about all they have in common. Miso is fermented soybean paste, and as unappetizing as that may sound, it is a tasty and highly nutritious food. Miso is available in a variety of types and these range in color and flavor to suit different cooking uses and different tastes. In addition to soups, sauces and stews, miso is an excellent seasoning for marinades, or with vegetables. The benefits of adding this interesting food to your diet are many. It is very easy to digest and actually aids in the digestion of other foods. It contains a great deal of vitamin B12 which we usually obtain from meat and dairy products, therefore miso can add this vitamin to the diets of those who are trying to cut down their cholesterol intake. Soybeans are rich in protein which, because of the natural fermentation process, is ready for the body to digest easily. The Japanese consider miso to be an excellent restorative. A perfect pick- me-up after a hard day's work, a good way to start the day, and even a remedy for hangovers! Miso is quite salty and as a salt substitute offers considerably more nutrition than any other. Because miso gets it flavor and health enhancing properties from living enzymes, it should not be boiled or cooked at high heat. Vegetarians have known about miso for a long time and have used it to add variety to their meals. If you would like to try one of the many types of miso, ask the manager of your local health food store for information and recipes. * courtesy of the Canadian Health Food Association and this newspaper. Trailing 3 - 2, the Tigers scored the tying goal with less than a minute left in the game. Jason Lange had made a brilliant save moments before that. Rebecca Taggart opened the scoring on a break-away pass from Chris Pot. Niki Defreitas scored from just inside the penalty line for a 2 - 0 lead. Chris Pot then tapped in an empty net pass from Niki to round out the scoring for the Lions. Kevin Rockett, Ryan Jackman, Chris Baumhauer and Adam Aitchison played very well, while Lindsay White played her best game. Then on June 16, the Lions played undefeated Hampton at Courtice High School and came out with a close 2 - 1 victory. This was an exciting game although the Lions held most of the play as Karl Weiner, Chris Baumhauer and Kevin Hockett controlled mid- field. Niki Defreitas opened the scoring on a pass from Rebecca Taggart. Chris Pot scored off an initial block shot by Niki. Ryan Jackman hit the post as he broke in alone on a nifty passing play from Chris Pot to Niki to Ryan. Michael Edey, Gavin O'Donnell played well defensively. Forwards Jeremy Forsey, Rebecca and Ryan moved the ball around well. Kevin Donovan and Lindsay White liad their personal moments of glory. Coach George Pithie is pleased with the performance of the team as they are positioning themselves and passing the ball much better. Tyler Gibson, of Bowmanville Senior Public School, grimaces as he puts the shot during games at M.J. Hobbs Senior Public School, June 18. A good home crowd was on hand to see the Orioles open up the scoring in the first inning. Ed Bird singled and was advanced to third on a passed ball after he stole second base. Mike Gallant then proceeded to knock Bird in with a sacrifice sacrifice fly. The Orioles continued to score in the second inning as Danny Annis and Bullit Fairey hit back to back doubles and added two more runs in the fifth inning and one in the seventh. Collecting hits for the Orioles were Ed Bird, Mike Gallant, Brad Bamsey with a triple, Chris Michelson, Kevin Smith, Scott Webster, Dan Annis and Bullit Fairey. The offensive star of the game for Bowmanville was Ed Bird who was 2 for 4 and scored three runs. Honorable mention goes to David Fairey who was 2 for 3 with a double and one R.B.I. Starting on the mound for Bowmanville was Mike Gallant who pitched five very strong innings of three hit ball to earn the win. Gallant gave l way to John Mutton, the Orioles stopper, who threw the last four innings and blew away the Little Britain batters. The defensive star of the game was Bullit Fairey who is the best defensive second baseman that this reporter has ever seen. Fairey made two great plays that Tony Fernandez would be proud of.
