I I V 8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville. July 8,1987 Yelverton and District Happenings OBITUARY [Intended for Last Week] A Night Hawk Lob Ball tournament was held last week in Pontypool in which "Centre-Field" the ball club based in Pontypool and sponsored sponsored by our neighbours Floyd and Dale Stinson, emerged the "A" Champions. Throughout the tournament they were undefeated and the final game was played vs. a Pickering team. The first prize was $300 plus Labatt Schooner Bags for the players. The two local participants on the team were Ernie Dart and Dale Stinson. On Thursday evening, Marlene Glasbergen hosted a miscellaneous shower for their niece, Miss Marcia Van DerMeer. Several ladies from Port Perry, Newcastle, and several local ladies were in attendance. Marcia will be getting married in mid July with reception in Manvers Arena auditorium following a wedding in Prince Albert. Terry and Brenda Malcolm and some of their children attended the 15th reunion of their Graduating Class at Guelph University at Honey Harbour this past weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Malcolm accompanied Todd Malcolm of the Woodville Selects to a 5-day hockey tournament in Ottawa this weekend. Howard's portrait that appeared in most local newspapers re his being named Victoria County's Pork Producers of the Year proved Howard to be quite photogenic. photogenic. Well done. The heading should have read Yelverton farmer not Janetville! ! Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Orval (Ona) Quacken- bush and her sister, Mrs. Laverne Sutton, of Nestleton and their families in the sudden passing of their father living in Campbellford. The funeral is scheduled for Monday of this week in Havelock. Mrs. Ida Hurtig moved from her previous residence west of Yelverton to her new home in Port Perry on Thursday of this week. Alb join in wishing Ida happiness and comfort in her new surroundings. We extend congratulations to a young lady who has graced our domicile on several occasions. We refer to Miss Francine Taylor, daughter of Bruce and Jean Taylor of Solina, who graduated with honours at the University of Waterloo with a B. Sc. in Kinesiology Degree. Best wishes are extended to Cliff and Yvonne Fallis, formerly of Pontypool, who have moved to Fenelon Falls. They will be badly missed in Pontypool and in Manvers Twp. we suspect, due to their heavy involvement in community community affairs over many years. Trust they too, will be happy in their new environment. environment. Yvonne, among her many other services in the past, was Pontypool correspondent correspondent to The Statesman for many years and handled the task conscientiously and with brevity - an uncommon trait in we news reporters. Congratulations are extended extended to Hay and Ernestine Robinson who observed their 40th Wedding Anniversary on Saturday evening with a dance at the Yelverton Church Hall. The hall was filled to capacity during the evening to listen to appropriate music supplied by D.J. Warren Sutcliffe assisted later in the evening by Gary Bristow on his steel guitar. In midevening midevening Clare Robinson as M.C. invited his parents to seats of honour on the platform platform where they were subjected subjected to not one, but two humorous poetic addresses. The first was composed and read by Ralph Malcolm (a brother-in-law), the second by Clare Robinson. These dealt with the more insidious parts of Ernie and Ray's past 40 years revealing the occasional juicy tidbit for public consumption. consumption. Ernie and Ray each replied expressing their appreciation to their families for arranging the festive evening and to all and sundry for their "presents" and "presence." All in all it was a very enjoyable evening particularly particularly for those who like to trip the light fantastic. Earlier in the afternoon the immediate family had congregated at Ray and Ernie's residence for a family dinner and presented them with a gas barbecue for a gift. Guests were present from Toronto, Peterborough, Ida, Plattsville, Lindsay, including son Darryl and his wife from Ottawa area and most local communities. The Robinson family have been an integral part of our Yelverton community life for the past many years. The best wishes of the community are extended to them for many more happy years. Mr. and Mrs. John Hofstetter were weekend guests of Laurie and Clare Robinson and family. This week is was our dubious pleasure to be called upon to make a mandatory contribution to the Health and Welfare of the Durham Regional Police. The long arm of the law accosted us, not half way to Toronto, but a mere 3 - 4 miles from home while passing through "Sleepy Hollow" sometimes referred to as Cadmus. Apparently according to the genial gentleman gentleman who transferred our personal invitation to contribute contribute to the cause, the local residents had complained to the Boys in Blue about speeding speeding through their fair if somnolent hamlet, requesting a "radar trap" to enforce their continued tranquility. We possibly aggravated our position by stepping up the horses so as not to meet a school bus in the "narrows" of Cadmus Bridge. Shucks! It isn't even considered a "charitable" donation for income tax purposes! Congratulations are extended extended to Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Ellis (nee Valerie Frew) who were married on Saturday, June 27th, with the reception later at Manvers Arena. Mr. and Mrs. Quenton Robinson and daughter left for a summer in U.S.A. where Mandy is assisting in a summer camp program there and Quenton serving as a camp chauffeur. The Robinsons have recently completed completed their "Uncle Tom's Log Cabin" - on their property north of Yelverton. Another couple of new houses have been started in the metropolis of Yelverton south of the four corners. y y t ! j " : il'tfef 6,/ : ' i m swatchQ The new wave in Swist watches.
