Bowmanville, July 15. 1987 Section Two Happy First Birthday Hi! I'm Jeremy Jon Dennis and I turned one on July 4,1987. My proud parents are Dave and Sue Dennis. My grandparents are Bruce and Jean Goudey, Bowmanville and Amil and Lorna Dennis, Kendal. Thanks to all who made my birthday so special. Letter to The Editor Dear Sir: When Darlington Council purchased 20 acres of the John Tabb farm for a dump in the very early 1970's we were told it would only be an aggravation to us for six or eight years. We endured the dust, smell, flies, seagulls, seagulls, crows, and papers in hay bales and fence corners. corners. We gave up swimming in the ponds because of the papers, plastic and cardboard that had blown into them. In 1978 after an environmental environmental hearing the easterly ten acres began to be used. This easterly section comes within 1000 feet of our house and we are down wind if it. The Chairman at these hearings assured us that it was to be used only until filled and with no further extensions of garbage garbage in the area. The other things that we were promised promised were that it was to be screened from us by trees and that the elevation would not exceed the natural natural height of land. Eight years later the trees are four to six feet tall and at the north-east corner the garbage is seven feet above the highest adjacent land. Since the dump was started no one has once monitored our well, and to get the papers papers gathered up we have had to complain nearly every time. One of my vivid memories is of coming from work to be met by my three little girls saying "Daddy we picked up four bushels of paper and garbage in the pond field today." The taxes on this farm are over $2300. I appealed them once because of the landfill and the judge took $50 off of the assessment on the house. Now the council, who have done nothing to prepare prepare for this day when the dump is finally full, wants to continue to use this poor bit of abused land as a transfer station. Why should it be necessary to truck junk fifteen to twenty miles out here to the northeast northeast corner of the township, and then truck the same stuff south again when the bins are full? Better surely to have a couple of boxes in each works department yard or fire hall; or give bonuses to dump at New- tonville or else Oshawa or Blackstock transfer sta tions. I'm sure that if the transfer station was here there would probably be ten to fifteen more hours each week when the attendant attendant would have no customers customers there and since the area is high and dry an attendant would be very necessary here to prevent fires. I realize garbage is a problem but I don't think that it should always be our exclusive problem. Yours very truly David W. Craig R.R.#5 Bowmanville, Ontario NDP Candidate KnockingOn Doors in Durham East Marg Wilbur, N.D.P. candidate candidate for Durham East, ; fias been knocking on doors;; in various communities in the riding. People in such diverse communities as Port Perry, Burketon, Enniskillen, Newcastle Newcastle and Courtice are very upset about high auto insurance insurance rates. Many people feel that their rates are increasing without justification. justification. Marg has been informing the homeowners about the benefits of the British Columbia Columbia and Manitoba Auto Insurance Plans. She has found people to be very receptive receptive to a similar plan in Ontario. In talking with voters, Marg has been faced with many situations of unfair gouging on the part of the auto insurance industry. A retired gentleman with a history of no accidents in Wilmot Creek showed an increase of $200. to $600. in his rate over a period of three years. A woman in Brooklin with a son under 25 years old, also with no accidents, pays over $2,000. A resident of Newcastle, recently from B.C., was shocked at the high rates in Ontario. Marg has promised to fight for a fairer system of Auto Insurance. The response to her survey in local newspapers newspapers has been positive and Marg is determined to keep working on this issue.
