The possible expenditure during the present summer of twenty to twenty-five thousand dollars on a water supply complementary to the present system, was announced announced this week by Fred W. Nelles, Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission. Bowmanville users increasing demands for water has now reached the stage where the supply is hardly big enough to meet the demand. There is no suggestion, Mr. Nelles declared, that the present system is providing any less than usual, but the increased services, and the increased use of water by citizens generally has brought about this condition. On Wednesday, the Commission issued a pamphlet which was distributed distributed around town asking water users to co-operate by keeping water usage down to a minimum until something can be done to definitely decide on what steps must be taken. B.T.S. Superintendent John Bain, on Thursday. Modern machines had to take a back seat last weekend when the basement at Alex McGregor's Drug Store, Bowmanville, had to be dug out. Workmen found it too difficult trying to wheel the hard pan dirt and stones out this narrow chute, so Jack Barrett, in charge of the operation, had what proved to be an excellent solution. He contacted a friend with a horse, managed to locate one of those ancient two-handled metal scoops and here they are bringing out the dirt without without too much effort. Not so long ago, this was the normal' method of digging cellars, but it hasn't been in use for some time since the tractors, loaders and bulldozers came into their own. Incidentally, today is moving day for McGregor's, when their stock will be taken across the street to the former Maher Shoe Store to allow space for further renovating the McGregor store. Mr, McGregor expects to be in business at the new temporary stand tomorrow.
