ARENA FUND SLO-PITCH -- The Bowmanville Junior C Hockey Club will be holding a Slo-Pitch tournament August 22-23 at Bowmanville Memorial Park. There will be four divisions, and 16 teams are required. DUNKING FOR DOLLARS -- The Bowmanville Recreational Recreational Hockey League will be holding a dunking booth at the Bank of Montreal Parking Lot in Bowmanville, Bowmanville, July 16, 17 and 18. This is in connection with the BIA's downtown sidewalk sale. Among the "dun- kees" will be local businessmen, teachers, town officials, officials, a lawyer, a dentist, police, animal control people, coaches and, yes, a councillor. Thursday's dunk- ings will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. LIONS TEE OFF--The Newcastle Lions Challenge golf tournament will be held Saturday, July 25 at the Newcastle Newcastle golf course. LAWN BOWLING -- The Bowmanville Lawn Bowling Club was the scene of the National Trust Trophy (formerly (formerly Victoria and Grey Trust) Ladies' Pairs tournament, tournament, July 8. The winners were skip Florence Litster and lead Bernice Yuill, both of the Oshawa Lawn Bowling Club. This was Florence Litster's third annual annual victory in this tournament. DARLINGTON SOCCER--The road to the Summer Cup finally ended for the Darlington Wanderers Sr. Men's Soccer team. After making it to the Cup finals, the team finally ran out of fuel, losing a 3-1 match to the Adria Croatia team of Oshawa. The Wanderers took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Chris Dreossi, but the game was tied up before the end of the first half. By the end of the second, the game was lost. "We just played too many games," said player-coach Don Westlake. "It was our eighth game in six days, and we just ran out of gas." The tournament will be open to members only, although spectators are welcome to attend. He offers rides daily, and all proceeds from the rides will be used to build a compound for himself and mate Sheba. Mike Hackenberger, one of Angus's trainers leads the way for the four children children on top. Jennifer Fullerton, the girl in front, won her ride free, as she participated in a relay race with Charlie the Pig earlier in the show. Jr. Orioles Win Three Out of Four On Wednesday July 1, the Cowan Pontic L and L Tool Junior Orioles travelled to Peterborough and lost 9 to 8. The Orioles clearly should have came out on top but with five errors they deserved deserved to lose. If the Orioles defense does not improve there is no way that : they can challenge for the ' Provincial Championship. Championship. Orioles Beat Whitby On Wednesday July 8, the Junior Orioles played host to whitby and beat the visitors visitors 10 to 8. Orioles Take Slouffville 18 to 4 Three Oriole pitchers combined on a six hitter and the potent Orioles offense offense was the story of this game. Brit Schuknecht, Troy Foster and Chris Michelson all pitched very well to keepe the team's winning streak alive. Sports Centre Ball Hockey Site by Jeff Hubbell The Darlington Sports Centre will be the site of the 1987 all-Ontario "A" division division Ball Hockey championships, championships, it was announced July 8. The tournament, which will be held August 28-30, will pit the 12 best ball hockey hockey teams from across Ontario, Ontario, from Chatham to Oshawa and as far away as Hearst. The first, held July 4, was the 10th annual Orono Jive Turkeys tournament. Low gross was won by Gord Laker in sudden death with a 78, a mark matched by second place Kick Fox. Low net winner winner was Chris Dwyer with 71, also tied by Don Clarke. The longest drive of the day went to Steve McKnight, while Randy Nixon was closest to the pin. On July 5, the Members' Mr. and Mrs. Tournament was held. Helen and Tony Kerry finished first with a low gross of 86, while Bob and Wilda Simpson won the low net. The men's closest to pin was Larry Crouse, while Carolyn Carolyn Garrod took it for the ladies. Longest men's drive was won by Gord Blaker, Helen Kerry for the ladies. The Pot of Gold was won by Larry Crouse and Carolyn Garrod won the ladies' match. WATER POLO -- The Aquatic Staff of the Town of Newcastle Fitness Centre will play their first water polo game of the season July 15, at Camp Samac in Oshawa. Spell "dog-days" of summer BORING. BORING. Bur why settle for just another humdrum Tuesday evening, sweating in front of summer re-runs when there is excitement, challenge challenge and the chance to socialize with folk just like yourself. Believe it or not, the action this year is at your local Optimist Chess club. That's right, I said Chess club. At the Port Hope Optimist Chess club to be exact. Before you reach for the comforting familiarity of your television remote control, control, let's explore a couple of enduring myths about the games of kings "Chess is for brains and other social deviants" Nope. If you can count to ten, plan a menu, balance a cheque book or read the back of your breakfast cereal the you can play an enjoyable game of chess. In fact, a poll found that chess was the third most popular recreational activ-; ity in the country. Swimming Swimming was number two. Public Public school children, Teachers, Teachers, Homemakers, Labourers, Labourers, Doctors, Lawyers, In dian Chiefs...all play chess. I once went out with a charming lady who would take great vocal delight in occasionally beating me. Much to the chagrin of my male ego. "A Chess game takes hours to play" Wrong again. Serious tournament tournament games can, and often do, require hours of concentration. On the other hand, the P.H.O.C.C. is first and foremost a social gathering. The average ' game lasts about fifteen minutes minutes and memebers will be encouraged to play many different opponents of vary- 1 ing styles and strengths. The first 30-45 minutes of each session will be devoted devoted to group instruction through the use of a large demonstration board and various handout. This will be followed by individual instruction for those who desire it against an ongoing background of pleasant banterand kibbitzing(table talk). Whether you have just learned the moves or are of Candidate Master strengh, the P.H.O.C.C. promises to deliver you from summer's dog-day blues. The Port hope Optimist Chess club summer program program runs every Tuesday evening from 7 pm - 11 pm commencing July 7, 1987 in Hewson Hall.
