Nancy Hooper and Kathy Morris placed second in tin can cricket. Glen Martin placed second in tetherball and Mitch Donaghue placed second in the bean throw. FLASHBACK --10 Years Ago -- Bowmanville driver, Don Yourth is currently in second place in the Canadian Canadian Automobile Sports Club regional standing following following a formula four race in Belleville last week. Don drives a Formula Ford and his partner and crew chief is Bill Waller, also of Bowmanville. SOCCER CLUB TO MEET --The Bowmanville United Soccer club will hold its annual meeting Thursday, August August 13. The meeting will be held at the King Garden Restaurant, at 7:30 p.m. BOAT COURSES OFFERED -- The Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons is offering several boating courses this summer. They include: a general introduction to safe boating; a safety course for boaters age nine to 13; a skipper saver seminar which will prepare participants participants for on-the-water emergencies; and a radiotelephone seminar where the phonetic alphabet and maintenace of the marine radio will be taught. RANDY MACDONALD KEEPS ON RACING -- In a follow follow up to his spectacular win at the Cayuga Speedway on August 3rd, Hampton native Randy MacDonald will race at the Shannonville Motorsport Park at Belleville, Ontario. The race is August 28-30 and Randy is hoping to drive off with another win as he continues to climb the ladder in the Players Challenge Series. REQUEST FOR RIDERS -- The Durham Region Horseback Horseback Riding for the Handicapped Association is looking for experienced riders with their own horses for the 9th annual Ride-a-thon Saturday, September 19 at Hoskins Stables in Blackstock. The 25-kilometre ride is to raise funds for the cost of riding lessons, special equipment and insurance for disabled riders. There will be trophies awarded and a lunch provided. TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR BOATERS --As the boating boating season is well underway, the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons offers these rules for a "safe and sane" boater. 1. Check your boat throughly and never leave mooring until you have done so. 2. Carefully observe wind, surface, tide and current conditions before starting. starting. 3. Never overload your boat. 4. Carry life preservers for, every person on board. 5. Carry filled fire extinguishers, extinguishers, lights, signal apparatus and ground tackle. 6. Exercise extreme caution when filling fuel tanks. Do riot smoke, close all hatches, ports and doors and wipe up spillage. 7. If in a power boat, keep out of the way of the vessel approaching from your starboard side. 8. Always be courteous, careful and competent. 9. Never make a turn at high speed. 10. Approach dock or mooring mooring against the wind or current, whichever is stronger. SWIM FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS--Jocelyn Muir's 60 day swim around Lake Ontario will be stopping at Port Darlington, Bowmanville on August 23. Jocelyn /has now completed almost three-quarters of the 700- /mileswim as she makes her way toward Ontario Place t for the finish August 29. Reports are that the pollution cproblems that occurred earlier in the swim are clear- ing up as she moves on in her swim. Jocelyn and her team have chosen Steve Winwood's song "Back in the High Life Again" as their anthem. It would be great to see the shores of Lake Ontario packed with well- wishers as this special lady swims by. Anyone wishing to pledge financial support for the swim can call 1-800- 268-7582, or stop by the local branch of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. TOURNAMENT TO SUPPORT THE ARENA FUND -- Bowmanville's Junior "C" Hockey Club is hosting the Arena Fund Men's Slow Pitch Tournament on August 22 and 23 at Memorial Park. QUENCH RUN IN COBOURG -- More than 400 runners runners are expected to be at the starting line to begin the 1987 Quench Run at Victoria Park in Cobourg, on Saturday August 15. The 10-kilometre event, begins at 9:00 a.m. The race is sanctioned aa a Class A race by the Ontario Track and Field Association. ROTARY HORSE TRIALS --The Bowmanville Rotary Horse Trials will be held in an inaugural one day event on August 30. The trials, which will be held at CFRB Farms at the Junction of Highways 35 and 115 in Orono, is a permit horse show governed by the Canadian Equestrian Federation. There will be limited stabling and bedding available on the premises or within 20 minutes of the CFRB Farms. TERRY FOX RUN -- The memories of Terry Fox live on in the 7th Annual Terry Fox Run Walk Jog Bike Wheel Ride on Sunday, Sept 13. More than a quarter of a million people turned up last September 14th at 2,000 sites across the country. The 10-kilometre runs last year raised a record $3.8 million for cancer research. research. Ontario continues to be responsible for over one third of the money raised by the Terry Fox Run. This year's challenge will be even greater as race organizers organizers hope to surpass last year's totals. More details on race locations will be coming as the time of the race approaches. ICE TECH HOCKEY SCHOOL -- Ice Tech Hockey School is coming to the Bowmanville Arena, December 21-24, 1987. Registration for the school is open to all players, boys 7-14 years old, and girls 7-20 years old. Advanced players in the five to seven age group are also welcome. Bowmanville 623-6353 Newcastle Fox Sport Lakers Win Opening Playoff Game Against Little Britain The Newcastle Fox Sports Lakers launched their playoff series with Little Britain A's on Saturday afternoon and came up with a big 10-3 victory. Team members include, front row 1-r Play Manager John Robinson, Rob Bruchett, Brad Kelly, Troy Foster, Kevin Green; back row, Doug Rickard, Scott Michelson, Brett Foster, Dan McMullen, Timm Jenkins and Coach Bud Fanning; absent, Jeff Fox, Craig Hornby, Rob Terry, Mike Meraw, Joe Werheid, Bruce Austin, Ralph Stender. Newcastle Lifeguards Place Second in Beach Competition When these five Town of Newcastle lifeguards went to competition they got the job done. The team pictured above placed second out of six teams at the Oshawa Beach Challenge '87 Waterfront Guard Competition Competition held at Lakeview Park in Oshawa on Friday, August 7. The competition included an open water situation, first aid work and a priority assessment event. From left, Brad Sainsbury, Shawn Locke, Mark Smethurst, Melanie Scott, and Gord Small. These lifeguards are part of the reason why the Town of Newcastle is able to enjoy such safe swimming. Congratulations team! 5 A I.' A S' 3 / On Saturday afternoon, August 8th, Little Britain "A's" and the Fox Sports Lakers tangled at the Village Village Park in the first game of a best of five series for the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association Senior "D" play-off series. The Fox Lakers got off on the right foot and stayed right on it to defeat the Little Little Britain "A's", 10 to 3 with Timm Jenkins on the mound and the winning pitcher. Jenkins received excellent support from his teammates and they played flawless ball from start to finish. Dan McMullen took over at the start of the ninth inning on the mound replacing replacing Timm Jenkins. Little Little Britain had three pitchers pitchers in the game, starting with Jack Phillips, then Brian Hendricks and Shawn Granger finishing out the game for the "A's". Fox Lakers' Doug Rickard Rickard was the first batter up in the first inning and Rickard Rickard hit a home run over the left field fence on the first ball pitched. Another highlight highlight in the game with the squeeze play on, Scott Michelson laid down a perfect perfect bunt to score a big run for the Fox Lakers. Troy Foster, a Bowmanville Bowmanville Junior brought up for this game, banged out two home runs for the Fox Sports Lakers. Other Lakers Lakers getting hits were Rob Brushctt, Brett Foster, Brad Kelly and on the defensive defensive side of the ledger we had Kevin Green, Scott Michelson, Troy Foster and Dan McMullen performing well at their field positions. The only bright spots for the Little Britain "A's", was the play of Peter Clyne on first base, and teammates Brian Hendricks, Larry Thornberry and Glen Wat- ten. The Fox Sports Lakers deserved the win due to a good team effort, and the will to win. Sunday's game in Little Britain was posponed because because of rain, the Fox Lakers Lakers were to be in action in Little Britain on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. Kendal Bantams Just Make it Into Playoffs With a season record of 13 wins and 11 losses, the Kendal Kendal K's Bantams 1 just made it into playoffs by being the sixth ranking team in the league. In their final game, July 29th, they lost to Whitby 6 - 1, the team they are also playing in ther first playoff round, that started Wednesday, Wednesday, Aug. 5th at 7 in Whitby, with the second game scheduled for Kendal, Sunday, Sunday, Aug. 9th. The series winner will meet Peterborough. Peterborough. During the season ending game with Whitby, the K's only managed three hits. Mark Walker smashed a homer and Brandon Coyle and Bill Todd came up with one hit each. KARATE DEMONSTRATIONS -- The Wadd Kai Karate Karate Club will lie holding a demonstration at the Bow- manville Mall, Saturday, September 12,1987. "Team Masters" thrilling Oriole Legion Bantams Drop Opening Game to Trenton The Bowmanville Oriole Legion Bantams lost to Trenton on Saturday by a score of 21-16 in the opening opening game of their E.O.B.A. best of seven series to determine determine the representative at the Ontario Baseball Association Association "C" Tournament in Comma. The pitchers did not have a good day as Trenton coach Murray Goulden sent three to the mound and Bowman- ville's Terry Donohue used four pitchers. The game was closer than the score would indicate as the teams were separated by one or two runs for much of the game until the 9th when Trenton scored three to clinch it. Wigley and Butler hit four for five and McMullen and Newberry had three for four to pace the Bears' 20 hit attack. The Legion Orioles had 13 hits led by Glenn Keats with three for five including including a two-run homer in the 5th, Jason Czvpyha was three for four while Jason Kiely, Darren Keates, and Brendan Donohue each had two hits. Donohue homered in the 7th with nobody on base. The 2nd game was scheduled scheduled for Trenton on Sunday but was rained out. The two teams were to return to Sop er Creek on Tuesday, August August 11, at 6:00 p.m. The T.O.N.B.A. ticket draw was held on Sunday, August August 3 at 1:00 p.m. and the winner of the ounce of gold was Jim Leslie of Bowmanville.
