Congratulatory letters and scrolls were received from Sam L. Cureatz, Q. C. LL. B. M. P. P. for Durham East, Hon. Allan and Moira Lawrence, Lawrence, M. P. Durham- Northumberland, Hon. David David Peterson, Premier of Ontario, Hon. John Eakins, M. P. P. Victoria-Haliburton, and the Lieutenant- Governor Lincoln Alexander Alexander of Ontario at Queens' Park. There was a large banner, "Congratulations on 90 years in business." The honours for most distance travelled to attend the affair went to Mrs. Amy Regan (nee Aiken) from Kamloops, B.C. The furthest east was Gananoque, with Grace Ralph, Bill Ralph, Irene Kirkby Dorothy Balfour, Balfour, formerly Carpenter. Jack Balfour and Russell Carpenter. Lindsay and Rutn Belch were able to get there because Dr. Lindsay Belch took the day off from surgery so that some of the other surgeons could catch up. This just happened to be the day picked. Ordinarily, Thursday is his major day for surgery. Dr. Willoughby Belch was in the operating room, but his wife Mary had her mother-in-law, Ethel Ethel Belch, Dad Aiken's sister, there for a short time. When people had greeted greeted the "birthday boy" and Ethel, they were seated at small tables in the dining room and served sandwiches, sandwiches, relish, olives and pickles, and later birthday cake, ana whichever they wished to drink, tea or coffee. Guests were asked to sign a special list in a book about Harvey Aiken's life, compiled for his 80th birthaay and brought up to date by Margaret Killeen. Killeen. After leaving Franklin House, Kerrilynn Challice, Tom and your correspondent correspondent went to the grand opening of the Irwin Smith Limited organ and music store in Port Perry. We ate at a "boat" dining lounge on the edge of Port Perry. It was a bit "rough and ready" but clean and good food. Your correspondent was tired when she got home and was too wound up for sleeping. However, she made up for it the next night. On Saturday, August 22nd, was Pontypool Fun Day, starting at 9:00 a.m. (officiallly) with a soap box derby. Some of the soap box derby cars were used by more than one driver. One car upset but the driver was not seriously injured. A little first aid did the trick. This was followed by a parade, led by the fire truck driven by Bob Reeson. This was followed by antique cars, clowns, decorated bicycles, bicycles, dogs and horses. The parade started between the church and Freshmart, followed followed up past the Post Office, Office, turned into the subdivision subdivision on Richardson, Coulter, Coulter, Nimigon, Corbett,Hooper, Corbett,Hooper, Propp and the park. On Sunday, August 23rd, the theme of the service in Pontypool United Church was on Rocks. One can depend depend for a foundation on a good, firm, solid rock. Peter was the rock on which the church was built. This is true no matter what denomination denomination you belong to. Marie and Laverne Finney Finney were away on a trip to Alberta from August 5tn to August 14th. They went to a wedding in Fort McMurray, Alberta, north of Edmonton, of Marie's niece. They flew to Edmonton and from there rented a car. They spent a couple of days in Fort McMurray, then went to Calgary, Banff, Jasper Park and the Columbia Ice Fields. They flew back from Edmonton home again. They very much enjoyed the West Edmonton Mall, the biggest mall in the world. The whole trip was very much enjoyed. The U. C. W. would like to thank everyone who saved their receipts for the C. C. A. program and because because of it the executive were able to earn $250.00. Congratulations! The two teenage girls arrived arrived from Birmingham, England, three weeks ago as part of the Central Area Pathfinders' exchange. Each girl moved into her host family's home and spent the following three weeks on a whirlwind tour of Ontario's major attractions. attractions. , Cathy Salo and Tanya Ketela, of Enniskillen, and their families, were the hosts for the two British visitors. visitors. They themselves had spent last summer in England England with Sarah and Susan on the first session of the Pathfinders exchange. Pathfinders is an advanced advanced division of the Girl Guides of Canada. The girls in both countries applied for the exchange and were selected through a screening screening process. The two English visitors, as they left chilly Birmingham, Birmingham, said they were anxiously anxiously awaiting Canada's lovely summer weather.
