\ 6 The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanvillc. September 2. 1987 Section Two Rebels Score High The Rebels Drum and Bugle Corps lias just returned returned from a very exciting tour. The Corps' first performance performance was in Butler. Pennsylvania at the American American International Open where they placed 4th in the "A" Class with a score of 74.3. One horn judge commented commented that he wished he was judging at the World Chariipionships so that he could give the horns a perfect perfect score. The Corps also collected $700 U.S. for their third place finish in the parade. Although the Rebels did not fare as well in the U.S. Open in Marion, Ohio, that did not detract from their performance at their final stop in Madison, Wisconsin at the Drum Corps International International World Championships. Championships. Even though the Rebels Rebels only had 33 members performing and were the ' smallest corps there, they earned a 4th place finish in the "AGO" Class (for Corps with 60 members or less) and placed 9th out of 36 "A" Class corps competing, scoring 75.3 in the finals. The horn line scored 18.8 out of 20 in preliminary competition which is the best score that they have ever received and was the highest of all the A60 corps. One judge said that our horns were better in tune than some of the top "Open" Corps. Another could hardly believe that the horn instructors were so young that they were still able to march (cut off age is 21). The color guard was praised for handling a lot of hard work well, and one judge felt it was too bad they could not show the other Corps "how to do it right." The Rebels' mature drummers were told that they interpret jazz well. Region Studies Pollution The Ontario Ministry of the Environment has awarded a grant of $39,500 to the Regional Municipality Municipality of Durham for pollution control studies. Environment Environment Minister Jim Bradley announced today. The studies will examine the regional municipality's existing combined sewer system and contribute to the development of a program program to reduce combined sewer overflow and basement basement Hooding. The minis-, try's grant covers 50 per cent of the costs of the study. The Durham sewer system system depends in the older developed areas on a single network of piping to deliver sewage and rain water to the sewage treatment plant. This leads to overloading of the system during heavy rainfalls. The overloaded sewers release untreated sewage into local creeks and Lake Ontario as well as backing up into basements of houses. "This grant is intended to help Durham find solutions to the problems associated with the older portion of its, sewer system," Mr. Bradley -said. Sponsored by Durham East P.C.
