RADIO CONTROLLED CLUB -- The Bowmanvillc Radio Controlled Car Club ended its official racing season on Sunday afternoon and announced the winners winners of each of the categories. Prizes were offered in a variety of categories beyond those based on speed. For instance, Tracy Bridges, who happens to be the only girl in the club, was named Rookie of the Year. Larry Hanna was the most-improved racer, while Bob Hyder won the award for best-looking car. The most dedicated member trophy went to Dave Conroy. Mark Conroy was named the most persistent driver. The youngest driver trophy went to Derrick Martin, age seven, while Paul Watson won the attendance plaque and Ed Crawford was declared best driver. On Wednesday (today, September 2,) hockey players can sign up from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bowmanville Arena and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Bowmanville Mall. Thursday's registrations registrations take place at the same times and places (from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the arena and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the mall). Then, there's a final day of registration on Saturday, September 5, at the Bowmanville Mall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Members of the Cheetahs squirt soccer team have worked hard this year but they didn't quite manage to experience the thrill of victory. That is to say, the team was winless until last Tuesday, August 25, when the parents decided to hold a special exhibition game in which they provided the opposition. In a match at the Waver ley Park in Bowmanville, the parents parents lost the game by a decisive margin, after which trophies were presented to all of the Cheetahs and a barbeque took place. The public is invited to walk, run, jog, bike, wheel or ride the distance in an effort to raise funds for cancer research. Last year, the 10 kilometre runs took place at 2,000 sites across Canada. Stan Hollingsworth, the Bowmanville Goodyear Plant Manager, won the low net for the third straight year at the Annual Inter-Plant Golf Tournament. The tournament was held on Saturday, August 15, at the Newcastle Golf Club and thanks to the organizational skills of Steve Routh, Jim Treen and Don Oke, the day was a great success.
