> A Man With Time on His Hands The (.'nnadian Statesman. Iiiiwmanville. Ot luhur 21. !!)87 !) Dan Hooper is a man who loves time. He is pictured above with one piece of his extensive watch and clock collection. The parlour clock, from the early 1900's, is on display with part of Mr. Hooper's collection at the Bowmanville Museum until the end of October. His collection includes a 1868 chain driven pocketwatch and a 14 karat solid gold watch. Mr. Hooper, who spent some time in Switerzerland refining his skills, also repairs and appraises timepieces, by Carolyn Hepburn sals and repairs. " Dan Hooper is a man who should never be late. While his work at Hooper's Jewellers on King 'Street in Bowmanville keeps him busy, he still finds the chance to add to his already extensive collection collection of watches and 1 other timepieces. ; Part of his collection is presently on display at the Bowmanville Museum, and it is certainly worth the trip, v "Pm-interested in the preservation preservation of old timepieces," said Mr. ■Hooper. }■ As well as collecting (j-watches and clocks, Mr. ^ Hooper performs apprai- yVV?.AM. ■ >- > - "They just aren't making them any more," he said, referring referring to the rarity of the timepieces he has found. "People are starting to hoard them." His search for valuable clocks and watches has taken him across Canada and the United States to trade shows and sales. Among his most treasured treasured watches is a 1868 chain driven key wind pocket pocket watch in a coin silver case. He also takes pride in the 1895 14 carat gold Elgin national national pocketwatch. According to Mr. Hooper, older 14 carat watches are rare. "The average working citizen couldn't afford one," he said. "They were often gold or silver filled cases," he added. Coin silver is one popular substance for watch case construction. It is cheaper and also lasts longer according according to Mr. Hooper. Yet, the strongest determining determining factor of a watch's worth is its condition. Mr. Hooper, who studied on a scholarship in Switzerland Switzerland after graduation from college, says that his hobby will never be outdated. At least he'll never run out of time. The children have games like one if they roll a two they pick up two cards and if they sound out both cards correctly then they move two spaces. To see if they are right a friend will look on the back and the answer is there. They have reading booklets which both grades colour then the grade ones circle the words they know and grade two has to read the whole page. There are two or three grade ones who can read the whole page. In the booklet there arc seven nursery rhymes.
