Orono United Church News 140th Toastmasters Spirits were flying high at last week's Toastmaster meeting. Not only was the process of chartering the Bowmanville Club initiated, it was also Contest Night. Toastmasters Bryden, Christl, Eyman, Konzelman and Barnes participated in the two-minute Impromptu Speech contest. The Contest Chairman, TM Egon Pedersen Pedersen chose the title "The Contest." Contest." TM Irene Konzelmann placed first, TM Tricia Eyman Eyman was the first runner-up and second runner-up was TM Nancy Barnes. The Humerous Speech Contest was won by TM Tricia Tricia Eyman who delighted her audience with "This Miss Priggy Went to Market." TM Joe Christl placed second with "A Farmer's Dilemma," and "Green Acres" by TM Konzelmann took the third placing. The two winners of , the contests attended the contest at the Area 16 level on the following night, October October 14, in Pickering. Five clubs participated in this event. TM Pat Fulton (Oshawa Revenue Club) won the Impromptu Speech Contest, followed by TM Joan Winter (Oshawa Club) and TM Marion McPhail (Lindsay CLub). Orono United Church Anniversary Committee have been working all summer, summer, with details and plans for our "big celebration", (Our 140th Anniversary). Saturday morning saw a beehive of willing workers busv setting up displays, displays, tea tables, screens etc, in preparation for the opening opening events, Saturday afternoon. afternoon. We were pleased and honoured to have one of our early guests, our Bay of Quinte President, Mrs. Mary Kellogg, of Welcome.. She also brought along several several friends. Mrs. Kellogg is a charming lady and we had enjoyed her visit here as speaker previously. A goodly crowd arrived arrived to view the many displays, displays, and to view Mrs. Velma Velma Armstrong's excellent video tapes of "Bygone Years." Reverend Milnes welcomed welcomed everyone and especially especially our special guests, Mrs. Kellogg. She brought greetings ana congratulated us on our fine acheive- ments. Mrs. Armstrong did a fine job of commentating on the pictures and many long ago familiar faces were shown to a very appreciative appreciative audience. Following Mrs. Armstrsong's tapes, the crowd were again treated to an excellent slide presentation presentation by Clare Gunter. These slides were donated by many local people and put together by Ed Millson and Clare Gunter. Many familiar faces of loved ones passed on, and many of this generation in all aepts. of church and Community activities, brought rounds of applause from the appreciative audience. audience. This was shown in the C.E. lower auditorium. The ladies served a delicious afternoon tea and many signed the guest book. The lovely flower arrangement arrangement was courtesy of Apple Blossom Shop (as well as the tall, graceful standards in fromt of the church). We would also like to thank Orono Electric for their gracious gracious help in supplying us a large T.V. screen for our video presentation. Saturday evening presented presented another viewing treat for the good crowd in attendance. The photography in these presentations was exquisite, and the narration and music equally exciting! The two sets entitled "The Joy of The Lord is Our Strength" and the other "Who Do You Say That I Am"? The latter one had lovely farm scenes on Gordon's own farm (Kirby area) and showed Mr. Allan Downes and Sons harvesting harvesting fields of grain. If you ever have an opportunity to view this presentation, by all means do so, for your viewing enjoyment! The sanctuary of Orono Orono United was well-filled for our Sunday morning special 140th anniversary. Special guests in attendance were Reverend Barry Pogue, chairman of Oshawa Presbytery, and Reverend and Mrs. A. Mrs. Olive Millson brought the introduction of Reverend Eustace, a longtime longtime family friend, and who also recently celebrated 50 years in church service. Our guest brought an entertaining entertaining resume of the excitement excitement and at that time troublesome troublesome challenges of the church members, who along with their shock of losing their beloved church, faced mammoth financial burdens. However, Reverend Eustace was auick to point out the trueiy dedicated community members, such as Mr. Mel Staples and the two fine builders, Percy Chapman and Edward Farrell. Farrell. He also mentioned the faith and dedication of Mrs. Lillian Tamblyn. She organized organized a large "Donnybrook Fair", and told people to bring everything they had no use for, except their husbands! husbands! This money went to manse renovations that were badly needed at that time. The final cost of the new church was $90,907.13 and donations came from far and near to help Orono rebuild this excellent church! A very large crowd enjoyed the delicious lunch prepared by the ladies and viewed the many displays downstairs. Mrs. Armstrong again showed her video tapes and everyone enjoyed them thoroughly. Sunday evening church service, again saw an excellent excellent crowd, to welcome our own Jeff DeJonge home to the pulpit. Orono United Church boasts 2 men sent from our Congregation, into full-time ministry. Reverend Reverend Eric Barr and Reverend Jeff DeJonge, and both men work together in Belleville areas. Aong with our choir's special music we were again thrilled to have our famous ouartet "The Country Country Four '. This group have been singing together over 30 years, and just like good wine, they get better with age! (attention Don Staples.) Jeff was introduced by an old school classmate, Carol Bailey and brought fond memories of his early years in this church. Jeff brought a stirring message "Where Are We? and "Who Goes There"? Reminding Reminding us we must not live on our past laurels, but plan ahead to make our church a strong voice in to-day's and to-morrow's world. Following a social hour downstairs, enjoyed by a large crowd, Mrs. Donna Hutton presented Jeff with a card and gift from a very appreciative congregation. Clare Gunter and Ea. (1847-1987) Our world grows smaller each day, when we hero in Orono can watch the dramatic dramatic rescue of the dear "wee girl Jessica", the little victim who fell into the deep well, away in Texas, U.S.A. From all reports the wee lady is coming along and everyone's prayers were answered! (Note) We have' a wee great-grandaughter named Jessica too, just a few months older than this wee one. so I guess we were especially involved! Club Dinner Meeting Approximately 60 persons persons in attendance at the regular monthly dinner meeting in Durham complex complex hall. A delicios full course Turkey dinner was thoroughly enjoyed by all and of course topped off with pumpkin pie and whipped cream. Following the dinner, a short business meeting was held and then all enjoyed "Bingo", suplied by Greater Pine Ridge Kinsmen Club Members. We are grateful to this hard-working group for donating donating their time and energy energy to our group. The residents on Mill Street South are thrilled to see brand new sidewalks, even for a short area. This area has been particularly in bad repair for a long time, especially our Sr. Citizens. Members of the Newcastle Men's Slow Pitch League got together Sunday evening, October 19, after a successful season of baseball, to present the champions champions with their awards.
