Malcolm - Mr. and Mrs. Howard Malcolm Malcolm spent a couple of days in Ottawa early this week, i The Yelverton U.C.W. met this week past on Thursday 3a.m. in the Church basement. J'inal plans were made for the Beef Dinner on Thanks- ! were pleased to see Jan article complete with pictures pictures entitled 'Trouble in the JKitchen" written and illustrated illustrated by our niece t Cindy DeGiusti, of Toronto, jin the September-October is- •sue of the Home Owners jmagazing-a guide to reno- Jvating and decorating your «home. Cindy, a freelance 'public relations consultant, provided an interesting essay essay on the trials and tribulations tribulations in renovating a home, as viewed personally by her and her hubby Cos, in their own domicle. Sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Clifford Pethick, formerly formerly of Enniskillen. Cliff was a genial, cheery natured chap.who.neyer.hesitatedto do a good ttfirri'for his fellow' man. We will remember the cold winter night in Bowmanville Bowmanville we left our car lights on and he gave us a tow and wouldn't, take a cent. One of a kind!" Neglected to mention in'last week's report that several local local workers for the Conservative Conservative cause in the last Provincial Provincial Election, were guests of Mr. Sam Cureatz at the Polish Hall on Stephenson Road in Oshawa last Saturday Saturday evening and report a very enjoyable evening. Belated congratulations to our provincial representative representative - the Honourable John Bakins on being elevated to the Portfolio of Municipal Affairs-quite an honour as well as a responsiblitv. This should be a real test of John's mettle and one he will probably probably handle with his customary customary efficiency. Another house has been moved onto a vacant lot south of Yelverton. Superficially Superficially at least it appears the calibre of housing nas definitely definitely deteriorated from previous previous domiciles-certainly it does nothing to enhance our Yelverton housing. Mr. Howard Malcolm spent a day in Winnipeg this week as tne federal Hog Producers Producers representative on the S.A.G.I.T. committee dealing with free trade. It would appear appear that the more one hears on the subject, the more confused confused the issue becomes. Those commodities who view the free trade issue as very beneficial to their producers producers if carried through could have a complete reversal reversal of situation if the Canadian Canadian vs American exchange rate were to improve. As long as an American dollar will buy $124.00 dollars worth of Canadian product, things look rosy. But... We were very pleased to have George and Evelyn Nahkata of Surprise Lake (near Thunder Bay) and their daughter Lorn of Toronto Toronto as dinner guests at Malconia on Friday evening. We met the Nahkata's when we were on vacation in Hawaii Hawaii three years ago and maintained a fine friendship ever since. Sorry to report that Mr. Balfour Balfour Moore entered Port Perry Perry hospital this past week. (October 6 Tuesday) and at time of writing is still patronizing patronizing that institution. Balf is there to correct a problem associated with diabetes. A speedy get well to Balfour. Where else but in our cosy hamlet could the congregation congregation and the organist at a Sunday Church service sing/ or play two different songs, 3 verses long without someone someone yelling "Enough, enough." A comedy of errors with the results ony best described described as "Gawd-awful". We also enjoyed the parson's slip of the tongue which described described our country as a "Land of Milk and tiungry"- particularly a-propos if we are to believe the crying need for emergency food banks in our provincial meg- apolis,-Toronto the Good, or better ,monickered perhaps as Hogtown. Currently the Provincial Conservatives are tackling the problem of picking a new leader. Personally, and who cares what I think but me, I would support Allan Pope of Northern Ontario, but doubt if the "deep south" would approve! approve! Neglected to mention that 3 of our young people partici- '-pated at Sunday's-service in : the Scripture reading les- sons-Dianne Gray, Wendy Gray and Tara Malcolm. The ushers were Linda Moore and Todd Malcolm. Mr. and Mrs. Alan Gundry of Barrie were week-end guests with Brenda and Terry Terry Malcolm and family and enjoyed the annual Thanksgiving Thanksgiving dinner this year at Eileen Eileen and Howard Malcolm's. Yelverton's annual Beef dinner was deemed a success success with over 400 adults plus a few children paying admission. The dinner was delicious and the desserts were mouth watering and plentiful. The ladies and gents not only from our community but previous residents residents like the Staples from Orono and the Allan Howes from Stouffville also dug in and assisted. Everyone performed performed the duties allocated them with efficiency. Following Following the dinner the draw was held for three articles-a lovely end table constructed and tastefully decorated by Mary Lou ana David Foote. A sweater knit by Laurie Robinson Robinson and a set of colourful doillies crochetted by Eileen Geniriux. The lovely table, a sample of the fine work performed performed by Mary Lou at her Folk Art studio at the summit of Bunker Hill on the Gray Line, was won in the draw by Marte Malcolm. The knitted knitted sweater was won by Mary Lou Foote and the Doilly set was won by a gentleman from Lindsay whose name we missed. Thanks are extended on behalf behalf of Yelverton U.C.W. to all those who either by their assistance or attendance made the event a success. Special thanks to Ye Editor John M. James for the kind words of promotion included included in the Bits and Pieces front page section. Thanks Johnny! Master Stephen Baker is currently spending a vacation vacation with his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Art Rowan and- Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pfoh. Pe are all familiar with that well known commercial advocating advocating a certain brand of tea with the punch line, "Only in Canada -- what a pity. Today we paraphrase the line to rend, "Only in Yelverton" Yelverton" devoid of pity.
