They'll be looking at the minor category in particular. Major midgets arc presently 17 years of age, while minor midgets arc 16. In the past, they were 16 and 15 years of age respectively. And the Ontario Hockey League drafts its prospective players from the ranks of the 16- year-olds. This means they are drafting minor midgets rather than major midget hockey players. All junior hockey teams within the OHA will be surveyed to determine determine their preference. Coaches Make Final Cuts BOWLING NEWS -- Liberty Bowl's Golden Agers took on the Golden Agers from Port Hope in a recent competition, competition, but lost to the Port Hope team. The boys played well in all the games, giving us some idea how the league games could be played this season. The Major Atom league games started with a bang, with Bowmanviille meeting Stouffville, here at the Darlington Darlington Arena, Oct. 17,1987. The boys played hard and managed to keep an even pace against Stouffville. The final result of the game was Bowmanville 4, Stouffville 4, with the credits going to; Andrew Andrew Ferguson, Mike Cramm, Warren Bate, Ryan Robinson - Assists going to Gary Adams, Bruce Harnum, Harnum, Ryan Robinson, Jeff Murphy. The second league game was played in Port Hope, Oct. 18,1987 with Port Hope taking control and winning with a score of 5 - 4. Bowmanville Bowmanville came on strong with a first period rush but started to come apart in the second period and Port Hope took advantage of the slip and took control for the rest of the game. Bowmanville's four goals were credited to: Gary Adams, Adams, Warren Bate, Mike Nesbitt, Doug Parkin; Assists went to Jason Jackman, Gary Adams, Warren Bate, Bruce Harnum, Jason Hoffman Hoffman and Doug Parkin. Atom Majors Down Pickering Pickering Village On Oct: 24, 1987,„the Toro Atom Majors, travelled to Pickering, ■ to , do battle against the Pickering Village Majors. After a half hour delay, due to a no show of the referee, the teams finally managed to take to the ice, after a 're placement ref was located. The Toros broke the ice with the first goal of the game, but Pickering followed close behind behind with their one and only. The Bowmanville boys found Pickering to be quite a handful when it came to dishing out the rough stuff - but they held their own and managed to put two more into the Pickering net to win the game 3-1. The Bowmanville; goalies. Steve Oko and Byron Harnum Harnum both .played an excellent excellent game. Jeff Murphy and Gary Adams receive credit for the three goals with the assists going to Ryan Robinson Robinson and Jason Hoffman. They have suffered only one loss and that was in an exhibition game against Oshawa "AAA" and it was also their first game of the season. This young team has demonstrated demonstrated that they have balance on defence and offence to succeed succeed and maintain the great success they had last season. On Friday night they visited visited Port Perry and came away with a 4-3 win. The Toros led 4-1 at one point before before Port Perry woke up and made this game close. Brent Strand had two goals along with Steven Brinkman, and Travis Laughlin who added singles. Assists were earned by Greg McMurter (2), Mark McCarthy and Steven Brink- man one each. Both Ryan Burtch and Ryan Stainton played well in goal for the Toros. On Saturday afternoon at Darlington, the Toros came away with a hard fought win (5-2) over Port Hope. This game was played end to end with both teams en joying excellent scoring chances. The Toros showed that passing is certainly going going to be a trademark this year as they moved the puck quickly from defense to forward. forward. The defense corps of Derek Lange, Danny Rowe and Matthew Brake and Kevin Kevin Pickell had to be sharp to prevent Port Hope's speedy forwards from mounting an attack. They continually fed passes up to the Toros' forwards forwards who finally broke a 2- 2 deadlock in the third period period by scoring three unanswered unanswered goals. Jason came first in a field of approx- imately 65 competitors. He said that the sunny and hot weather was perfect for the run. Congratulations, Jason! New Season for Bantams On Friday, October 9th Nichols Motors Bantams met St Gertrudes of the Oshawa Church League and came away with a 2-0 win. The game, played at Darlington, Darlington, had one outstanding feature-both teams showed up with green and white sweaters which made the game both difficult to play and to officiate, congratulations congratulations to the players and the referees for a fine job in a difficult situation. Nichols opened the scoring early in the first period when Shawn Baumhauer finished off a fine passing play from linemates Kris Matheson and Ken Cornish. The score remained tied as both goal- tenders played well. Brett Lambert in Nichols net was especially sharp as he registered registered the shutout. Midway through the third period John Rendell, playing on a line with Dave Aldridge and Gilbert Holder, scored to ice the game.
