Student council outdid itself in planning activities for this year's first spirit week, held October 13-16. The week was a successful attempt to create school participation participation and raise money for the United Way. Three ways were devised to collect money: Candy Kisses to be sent to that someone special, a penny drive, and the fee to join the excitement of musical musical chairs. The week's full agenda consisted consisted of different dress-up days and creative activities at lunch. Starting the week off was PJ. day with an exciting and funny tricycle race at lunch won by Terry Kellett. Wednesday was Toga day with a messy jello-eating contest held at lunch ana won by John Paul Duczma- lewski. Nerd day was the experience experience of Thursday with everyone everyone coming out at lunch to cneer on their friends participating participating in the air band. Everyone Everyone was grand but the "Cow Patties" and the "Village People" were the winning bands. The concluding day was Friday with everyone showing showing true school spirit as they dressed-up in the school colours colours of Red and White. With over 250 people involved in musical chairs you can imagine imagine the excitement of finding finding a chair in B.H.S.'s rendi tion of musical chairs, won by Glen Campbell. The week proved that B.H.S. has spirit and the dance held Friday night with the student body v s own choice of the top ten songs was their well-deserved reward. reward. STRATFORD TRIP Mr. Kelly Oh Tuesday, October 13th thirty-two BHS students went down to Stratford on a perfect Fall day to see Much Ado About Nothing and Nora, Bergman's revision of Ibsen's A Doll's House. The Festival's practice of giving student performances in the off season may be the most important part of their work, for every year young people who might otherwise never go to the live performance performance of a serious play are able to see professional theatre theatre that is sometimes first- class. The benefits were particularly particularly obvious this year; even some of the younger students were able to pick up and follow most of the lines, and they seem to be getting better at it every year. Tandy Cronyn's Beatrice was outstanding; the audience audience relished her witty war of words on Benedict (Richard (Richard Monette) and probably identified themselves more closely with the eternal but light-hearted battle of the sexes than with the main action. action. This was just as well, for their spirits were too high, the day too beautiful Alan McCullough, Mark Brooks. Anna Louise Richardson had a harder time in conveying a credible Hero. Those who were looking forward to seeing seeing William Hutt, perhaps Canada's doyen among actors, actors, now that he has returned returned to the Festival, were disappointed, but his alternative, alternative, Ron Hastings, was ex- . cellent in the role of Leonato. Nora in the evening at the Avon did not have the im-. pact of Ibsen's original; the addition of a scene in which Torvald is seen weeping after after Nora has slammed the door made nonsense of Ibsen's Ibsen's dramatic intention, although although it does stress the reversal reversal of the roles. The determined and dominant Torvald has exchanged his part for the submissive and child-like Nora, who has been transformed into the modern woman, perhaps the first in European theatre. The students from Bowmanville Bowmanville High School were, as they nearly always have been, outstanding in their bearing and behaviour, and indeed are highly favoured by the Festival authorities on this account. Bowmanville High School's Fourteenth Technical Awards Assembly by Leslie Dobroskinsky The Technichal Awards Assembly Assembly was held October 19th, 1987 at Bowmanville High School. Stu- Intended for last week Hallowe'en is scarcely over and the witches and the warlocks and an assorted variety of other unearthly creatures have slunk back to their closets for another year, when a "Civil War" breaks out. At dawn Monday morning we nearly jump out of our underwear (we must fix that elastic) as all hell breaks loose somewhere in the not too distant fields or woods. A barrage of shotgun fire awakens us from our sweet (or sour) dreams and unconsciousness to realize that today is the first day of the annual local deer hunt. Hunters of every shape and size, local (not loco) as well as a vast parade from the towns and cities migrate to the country to collect their pound of flesh-(perferably venison) by hook or by crook or more litter-ally by ball or by bullet. By evening the tumult tumult and the shouting dies to be re-enacted again on Tuesday Tuesday a.m. by more nimrods. As you may have presumed by now, deer (with 2 E's) hunting never has been our favourite sport. The prospect of shooting a gentle eyed deer has about as much appeal appeal to us as blasting away at a yearling Jersey calf. But to Wood & Drafting ... B.H.S. Students' Council Plaque ... He is already up and about and walking short distances in hospital. Mrs. Clare (Laurie) Robinson Robinson was a recent visitor with her parents, Re ta and John Hofstetter of Platsville.
