History Trip* by Leslie Dobroshlnsky The history department of B.H.S. headed by Mr. Morris is taking an interesting approach to learning. The course has combined class room learning with trips to museums featuring material being studied. This approach is being used lor grade 10 and 11, Basic through to Advanced. The grade 10's spent an afternoon at Queen's Park. Their adventure began with a brief tour of the legislative building and the opportunity to sit in on question period. Unfortunately, Mr. Sam Cureatz was unable to meet with the classes on three separate occasions. The grade 10's also participated in a three part series entitled "Suicide Awareness'Nhe first part was a video "Listen to Me" the 2nd was an assembly with the speaker being Mrs. Nancy Mutch (director ot Durham Region Distress Center) and the . 3rd was a discussion of the material learned. The grade 11's visited the Royal Ontario Museum where they participated in a program that covered a museum part, which entailed looking at displays and a class part, which allowed the students to handle artifacts of the time period being studied. The trip's basic purpose is to make history more real to life by allowing the students to touch the objects Instead of the impersonal approach presented in books. The Co-op Students Conference by Qall Seto On Wednesday morning, November 25, 1987, many of the Co-op students who were about to travel to Cobourg for the Co-op Students Conference awoke to a morning of blowing snow and drizzle. However, the expression of 'Pride In the Past and Faith In the Future' seemed to rouse spirits for the rest of the day. The Co-op Conference for students and adults which was held part In Cobourg and part In Port Hope, In my opinion, was a great success. Since our school was one of the first to arrive, the juice and muffins offered to us were extremely welcome. I believe one of the most advantageous events that took place was the students' opportunity to meet other Co-op students and share work experiences. I met a number of - people there, both students and adults whom I found quite Interesting. After the other schools arrived, the 'Working^. People's Picture Show' was' extremely enjoyable arid Informative. The show was able to blend humour', intellect, . sensitive issues and social problems together into what was an extremely fun presentation. Although the depiction of some problems such as sexual harassment was funny, the message of how wrong it is was clearly conveyed with its stereotypical images. After the show ended, it was great to meet the actresses and learn how their production worked. When all the students had arrived at the Port Hope Legion, the lunch we were served was delicious and the meal was well worth waiting for. As soon as lunch was finished, everyone was really excited about the carousel and .luckily the students were given some time to find their table. During the carousels, the students were a bit shy In asking questions, but within 15 minutes, many enquiries were being made. The allotment of 30 minutes was quite sufficient for each presenter. It was excellent hearing first-hand experiences of many occupations which was very informative. The presenters were very friendly and made everyone feel at ease. Some of the topics discussed were of the sensitve nature like 'why do lawyers have a bad reputation?' and very basic questions such as 'what are the requirements for the job?' Out of many questions asked, all of them except for the almost unanswerable ones were finished with a complete answer. As the carousels came to a close, a survey was handed out and this provided a chance to express personal opinion on the conference In whole. Alter ■ bidding goodbye to some new friends and saying 'Thank You' to the presenters, the students proceeded to their buses. On the way back to school, I felt as though I really learned something about the occupations I planned to pursue and In one of the carousels, some post-secondary Information was given out so I had a record of certain requirements and my scratchpad scratchpad had notes scribbled on It. Over all, the conference was enjoyable, as I am sure the other students liked It too. Many of my friends decided to either pursue or drop the occupation they Intended to study lor, which was excellent In helping make up their minds. The entire organizing body was both courteous and friendly as well as the entire reception. Tho thought that stuck in my mind was the amount ol Information I had acquired and the conference itself ol how fun It was. I'm glad that everyone will receive the opportunity to seek new ideas In attending the conference,
