Letter to The Editor I am as a rule, not the type could convince us to. keep it of person to vent my opinions opinions or wishes upon others, nor do I write letters to the editor of any newspaper let alone the local newspaper of the community, which, I chose to live in since buying my property in 1967. As a city boy wishing to farm, I have through the years managed to do so, with the help of many of those farmers already established established in the community. Unselfishly, they have given their valuable time and tolerated -my inquisitiveness inquisitiveness and helped me in times when I needed them. Today, I pride myself in having the ability to judge and handle cattle and horses with the best of them. I thoroughly enjoy my farm and hope to for many more years in this community. community. I'm grateful to the fine neighbours I have, past and present. I'm grateful to those who became friends/ These, people helped and welcomed me to this area since 1967 and one of these people is Bill Hale. Which is one reason I feel compelled compelled to write. Well, has this community changed since 1967? Many years ago, this area, sparsely populated known as Clarke Township was full of honourable people, mostly farmers. When they accumulated à certain amount of garbage, they took it to Bill Hale's site which was started by his father. Now, at the time this was no big deal but it appears appears to me, as new people move into the area and the area is slowly being built up, the accumulation of wastes has increased and of course ends up at.Bill's old site. It's my understanding that a petition is being circulated circulated against the landfill site and against any further development of the site now owned by a reputable company, company, Laidlaw. It appears to me that all of a sudden a few people have become do- gooders. Now I'd like to ask, what are these people trying to prove? Is the need for certain certain individuals to create their own ivory tower so great that they will jump to protest any cause where ever they may find a scapegoat, or are they just trying to see their names in big bold print extolling what héros they are? Boy, what a laugh. The do- gooders don't want a dump in their community. Ajax doesn't want Toronto's, we don't want Ajax's etc., etc. Personally I wonder if we left the solution in the do- gooders hands, how would they propose we dispose of it? Where in the hell is it all to go? Maybe the do-gooders at home. Wouldn't our town's streets look cute? Can't you just picture, little green mountains on everyone's front lawns. At least the lawns wouldn't have to be mowed. We could call it art. Maybe these do- gooders could explain how we coirld exist and create no wastes - wow - what an Eden. Me, I think I'll continue continue taking my refuse to Bill's old site. I think we should face facts. Wastes do exist. Landfill Landfill sites are necessary. The landfill site in our community community is now controlled by a new and competent company company called Laidlaw. Laidlaw Laidlaw is a public company (owned by shareholders) which is, underthe jurisdiction jurisdiction of the federal and provincial provincial governments, licenced licenced by these governments governments who continuously take tests to insure a clean disposal kite:' Not' to mention mention Laidlaw, who do their own testing. Laidlaw is one of the largest waste disposal disposal companies in Canada, the third largest in North America. This company pays enormous taxes to this community which benefits us all. We already are one of the highest tax paying areas in Ontario. If we didn't have Laidlaw and other businesses in our community could you just imagine how much higher our taxes would be? Laidlaw Laidlaw is developing ideas to improve and absorb the costs of truck routes and work is being done experimenting experimenting with composting, etc. Sounds okay to me. I feel instead of wasting our time trying to find fault with everything which bothers us, maybe we should be big enough to ask ourselves how can we individually individually cut down on our wastes? I'm sure if anyone could come up with a good suggestion, this company would be kind enough to listen. listen. I've used this site since Bill sold it and personally I feel it's being run efficiently efficiently and competently. It certainly looks clean enough to me. Now if someone were to ask me what I'd suggest. Why I'd say let the land site expand. Let's negotiate royalty royalty fees for extra tonnage. Let's negotaiate garbage pick up for everybody with no increase in taxes and with a prayer on my lips, maybe lowered. What do I do about my garbage? garbage? Well I crush the cans and paper containers to reduce reduce bulk. Sometimes I break up the jars and bottles bottles into a safe container.
