'MkVT ***■: FLASHBACK -- 10 YEARS AGO -- Saturday, December December 3, McGregor Atom Toros defeated Lindsay 4-2 in Bowmanville. Goal scorers for the locals were Tom McLaughlin, Jon Clieff, Brent Neill (2). Assists went to Neill, Dreossi, Dawson, Heard, and McLaughlin. Alan Urich was in goal. TOROS HEADING FOR EUROPE -- Last week, the final go-ahead was given to the 1986-87 Skinners Insurance Insurance Bantam Toros "All Ontario Championship" team to proceed with fund-raising. The Toros are planning planning to leave Dec. 26, 1988, for a two-week tour of Sweden and Finland or Germany and Austria. The exact destination is to be determined by the O.M.H.A. The hind-raising will start on January 9 with a bottle drive and the team members would appreciate your support. See ftiture editions of The Canadian Statesman Statesman for further details. WINTER SWIMMING REGISTRATIONS -- Registration Registration for the winter sessions at the Town of Newcastle Fitness Centre will be accepted up to December 23rd. Lessons start January 5 and continue until April 2. Further details are available in your fall and winter, community activity guide published by the Town of Newcastle's Department of Community Services. Lessons Lessons are available in almost all categories, although spaces in semi private and private lessons are limited because of a lack of instructors currently available. Call the Fitness Centre for further details. OLYMPIC TORCH BEARERS -- Five residents of the Town of Newcastle will be taking a turn at the Olympic Torch Relay next Monday, December 21st. Local runners runners who will be participants for Day 35 include: Sherry Prouty, of Newcastle Village; Robert Roughley, of R.R. 1 Orono; Robert Barrett, of Bowmanville; Melissa Harty, of Bowmanville; and Barbara Morton, Of. Hampton. And the following day, Wayne Pye, of Bowmanville will also be participating in the relay. Good luck to all of the above runners. Let's hope for Warm weather. THEY DESERVE A MEDAL -- Actually, the request fob nominations for Celebration '88 medallions produced produced a large number of worthy candidates. The Celebration Celebration '88 Committee has announced that the following six Town of Newcastle residents will receive medallions medallions for their contribution to sport. The winners are: Jason Carleton, of Orono, (male athlete); Kim Haag- mans, of Hampton, (female athlete); Joe Kennett, of Bowmanville, (volunteer); Art Morton, of Hampton (official); (official); Richard White, of Bowmanville, (coach) and Ward Skinner, of Bowmanville, (sponsor). The presentations presentations of the medals will take place on Monday, December December 21, during the torch ceremony at the corner of King and Temperance St. The program will commence at about 3:30 p.m., with the torch arriving at 4:07 p.m. The Maple Leaf Karate Club had eight medal winners winners in the International Karate Association Tournament Tournament in Ottawa. The Bay Sports team played their first game on November 14 at Darlington arena, skating to a 2-2 score with St. Gertrude's of the CYO. On the very first "rush" Jeremy Jeremy Woodcock scored on a rebound from Joel Crombie and David Real. The Toros added another early goal when Tyler Stokes scored from David Szabo. The Mill- brook team fought back and tied the score earlv in the second period. Bowmanville 3 Cobourg 3. A strong defensive effort in Cobourg after a shaky start resulted in a draw. Cobourg Cobourg struck for two early goals in the first period and appeared to be heading for a victory until the Toros struck late in the second period. Steven Desmeat connect ed on an assist from Ryan Stewart. Just two minutes later Joel Crombie scored on a set-up by Jeremy Woodcock. Woodcock. On the ensuing face-off Jeremy won the draw, split the defence and beat the goalie goalie for an unassisted goal. Cobourg tied the game early in the third period and although both teams pressed hard for the winner, the defences defences thwarted all attacks. This was the first game for the team since their "Defensive Hockey" instruction instruction sessions and it was obvi ous they had benefitted from the lessons. Neil Bateman. This should be an exciting 1987 home conclusion conclusion for fans as Ajax is the only team to have defeated Bowmanville this season.
