f I Community Care Holds Christmas Luncheon The Community Care Christmas Luncheon was held at the Bowmanville Legion this year. On Sunday afternoon we had a real pleasant surprise; surprise; we received a phone call from an old friend in Kelowna, B.C. whom wc haven't seen or talked with for over 40 years. Back in 1947 a group of we "Easterners" "Easterners" went out west on a Harvest Excursion and eventually ended up working working for a German-Canadian family, Carl Friedels, his father and brother Joe on their farms east of Fair- view, Alberta. Bowmanville, December 23,1987 13 They treated us well and between us has grown a bond of friendship which has continued over the years despite the fact the only communication we have had directly since then has been our annual Christmas letter. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, his brother Joe, who came to Oshawa to pick up a new car, was killed in an automobile accident on the way home. Understandably, Understandably, it was a real thrill to hear Carl's voice again. As the saying goes "New friends are silver, but old friends arc gold, countyour age by friends not years, countyouriife by smiles not tears". Miss Candy Malcolm spent the weekend with her parents. Candy returned home from England on Monday Monday where whe spent the past week in pursuit of her travel affairs but found time to take in a couple of theatre shows in London as well. She reports everything everything in England is quite expensive, expensive, e.g. $4.00 for a lowly hamburger. On Saturday the Glas- bergen families held their annual Christmas gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Glasbergen .and t girls in Port Perry. Mr. and ; Mrs. Frank Glasbergen and family were the local limbs of the Dutch family tree in attendance. Also on Saturday Maitheb Farms hosted their annual Christmas party for the employees employees and their families at the home of Terry and Brenda Malcolm. A number number of potential candidates for the future services of the Manor danced the night away to the music supplied by D.J. Ron Elliott. A surcease surcease from the manual effort effort of dancing was provided provided with a timely lun- chbreak courtesy of the ladies who sponsored the event. All in all it was a very successful evening. On Sunday morning our Yelverton . United Church was well" attended (for a change) due to two special attractions. #1 the Sunday school under the capable guidance of Superintendent Superintendent Hazel Gray was in charge of the service, # 2 following the service a pot luck dinner was provided by. those in attendance followed followed by a short program by Barbara Porter. The White Gift service was conducted conducted almost solelv bv the students. Hally Hurrin and Jamie Gray lit the 3rd Advent candle. Tara Malcolm Malcolm read the Old Testament Testament reading. Wendy Gray and David Carson were the principals in the story of the White Christmas Christmas story re-enactment assisted assisted by ayariety of angels, wise men tjnd other nativity characters; Mrs. Donna Carchide lead a prayer as did Tanya Carson at the conclusion of the service. Gifts were handed out to the children after the service. Sunday, December 20, the Communion service was observed at the .three charges at the special Christmas service. Three lovely poinsettas enhanced the church's Christmas decor, placed there by Mrs. Ida Hurtig and GREETINGS OF THE SEASON We 'd like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family the best of the season.
