i The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanvillc. December 23, 1987 3 Happy First Birthday As I sit at my desk pondering pondering the pros and cons of rushing out on the weekend to bity a real tree for my apartment, it slowly dawns on me that the "Big Day" is only one week away. I really shouldn't be so surprised. After all, this whole year has flown by so quickly. Last week marked my eighth month of employment with The Canadian Stateman. It now feels like so much longer than that. This year is my first Christmas on my own. Well, not exactly on my own. I do have a large assortment assortment of stuffed creatures creatures to keep me comfortable, comfortable, and all of my family and friends are only a phone call, or a car ride away. Still, this year I've had to get into the Christmas spirit pretty much all on my own. It really hasn't been hard. The many (and I do mean many) Christmas concerts, plays, and carol sings that I attended attended in the course of my journalistic duty helped to get my seasonal seasonal good wishes well underway. Late night drives to and from business business and pleasure allowed allowed me to enjoy the many lovely lights and Christmas decorations throughout town. My hat is off to the homes on Old Scugog Road. Your wonderfully wonderfully colourful properties properties have given my several several late night runs an added lift. Yet, the really special part of Christmas is going home. Did I really say that? It seems I've fought for years to get out on my own and now I can't wait to get back there. But families are what Christmas is all about. « By the time I get home for turkey and my Dad's stuffing, the tree will be decorated and the pile of presents starting to form beneath it. The two furry feline creatures, affectionately affectionately called Simba and Ttipaz (their unaf- fectionate names aren't fit for publication), that haunt my parents' home will already have started grabbing tinsel and chewing parcels. The madness of trying to co- ordinate children and spouses and a new grandchild will fill the air, along with the panicked unspoken thoughts of "Will Mom remember where she put all the presents?" I can hardly wait. I made a pact with myself myself after last year's last minute trips to half a million stores in search of several gifts, that I wouldn't do that same thing this year. I'm happy to say that it won't be necessary. My presents presents have been bought and wrapped for weeks (except for one or two little little things) and I couldn't be prouder of myself. I stopped by the Toronto Toronto Eaton's Centre last week to visit my cousin. It made me appreciate having completed my shopping in good time. As I stood surrounded my the massive crowds I was temporarily unable to move. It was only after Jennifer grabbed my hand and led me to relative relative safety on the escalator escalator that my real Christmas beliefs set in. It doesn't matter that I shopped ahead of time. It doesn't matter if I remembered remembered everyone I was supposed to. It doesn't even matter if I get a tree or not. What matters most is that I am alive and well and so thankful for things I can never put a price tag on. This year may have flown by quickly, but it has also brought me many happy and rewarding times. It is simply unfortunate that, not everyone looks back with the same feelings. feelings. To one and all I say: "God bless, I hope Santa is generous and best wishes for the holiday season and the coming year."
