16 The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanvillo, December 23, 1967 Section Three Providence-Shaw's W.I. Letter to The Editor Sleeping Bear Delays Santa's Elves at Waverley Christmas Concert Members and their guests gathered at Maranatha Church Hall on December 10. President Thelma Gil- bank welcomed the group, read a poem on "Thoughts of Christmas" and directed us to help ourselves to a catered luncheon, a relaxing change from a "pot luck" buffet, (no dishes). The singing of carols was enjoyed and beautiful to hear. The regular business agenda was followed. A donation donation to the new Campbell School was approved to honour honour Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Campbell of the Shaw's Community. Correspondence Correspondence was received from the Hampton branch regarding their February 2nd meeting. The December Collection will be donated to the Salvation Salvation Army. The Roll Call was to name a favourite carol and we certainly had a variety. At this time we introduced our guests. We enjoyed hearing Dorothy Dorothy Crago play 3 selections on her violin. The program was a panel who were "Remembering Christmas" - happenings fromthe past that perhaps are still family traditions. Music was addressed first by Shirley Brown whose earliest earliest remembrance of Christmas Christmas music was the tune "Toyland", the theme of Eaton Eaton s radio program when Santa kept all his believers up to date with the North Pole activities. For many, this was a memory as well as the "birth" of Rudolph and Frosty. Do you remember the Salvation Army Band playing on a street comer or the church carillon playing carols? Music at home developed developed into a family band as the children learned to play musical instruments. Marg Killeen put the Food traditions traditions into verse as she progressed through A to Z with edible delights. It's doubtful how many times she really tasted that "Z" dessert dessert - she had such trouble pronouncing it. There really are so man foods that are customs of Christmas. Isabelle Isabelle Elliott spoke on the cus T tom of sending cards and letters. letters. Keeping in touch with those far away is a Christmas Christmas tradition she convinced us to carry on. Decorating was the topic assigned to Marilyn Dow who opened up an assortment of tree ornaments, ornaments, many which we had seen on our parents' trees. The blown glass, the glass beads, the paper mache bells and a toy snowman that held candies were some of the older ones. The new ones included styrofoam, baked dough and twine vA* » t(Ot" 0^®° yviieilie Oheer-f '^We wish to extend to our Customers and Friends our sincere wishes for a Merry Christmas and- a Happy and Prosperous New Year. She spoke of the expectations expectations of cnildren then and now and how thankful she was to get one gift. The Swish Bell Ringers performed for the 2nd year at the December meeting. Those bells are really busy this month. We welcome another new member to our branch, Gladys Gladys Brown, from Orono and hope she enjoys the interesting interesting programs of Women's Institute. Even with a crowded crowded room, we missed those who were absent. Shirley Brown P.R.O. Dear Mr. James: I am surprised at the lack of public reaction to the proposed proposed expansion of the landfill landfill site north of Newtonville. For a community that so effectively effectively opposed and defeated defeated the nuclear dump threat in the summer '86. we are strangley quiet this fall. The only explanation to this silence must be a lack of awareness of the impact of this mega-project on our doorstep. Everyone immediately immediately recognizes the threat of nuclear waste on us and our descendants. Not everyone appreciates the environmental environmental effect of hundreds of acres of toxic waste deposited deposited over a large tract of i ductive farm land. Other communities have kept dumps out of their municipalities. municipalities. Those who have been unsuccessful are paying paying the price today in their quality of life and higher incidence incidence of cancer and disease. disease. If this expansion is allowed allowed to go through it will only be the beginning. Once pro- the provincial government finds that we are an 'easy mark', we could become the dumping ground for the whole province. We are up against a large corporation (Laidlaw Waste Systems Ltd.) who will have all the 'right' answers and a government who has a waste problem to solve. When 700 trucks a day are grinding through our towns and villages ana the dump is slowly eating up our countryside, countryside, it will be too late to complain or protest. We must demand now that our elected representatives at the municipal and provincial levels protect us against this threat to our community. We are unfortunate to have to face two serious challenges within such a short period of time. But if we act together now, we can do to Laialàw what we did to Eldorado and prevent our community from being 'dumped on again. David Scott Clarke Resident. c.c. Committee of Clarke The elves in the picture above seem to have a big problem. When they went to the sleigh to get ready for their yearly Christmas run, they discovered a large bear in the way. Well, the story had a happy ending and everyone who attended the Christmas Ü concert at Waverley Public School on Tuesday, December December 15 saw Mrs. Claus come to the rescue. The whole Christmas performance was a great success and the staff and students of the school proved that they are definitely in the Christmas spirit. i.
