; 2 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, January 13,1988 Section Two Yelvertonians Welcome 1988 Yelverton News by H. Malcolm To those of our readers who have welcomed the "new year of'88" with a cup of lukewarm tea and a discreet discreet yawn we extend a rousing Happy New Year with our abrasive ballpoint; to the rest of you, who have welcomed the new year with ' unbridled enthusiasm enthusiasm and an endless procession of glasses of good arid not so good cheer, we whisper as quietly as possible "Happy Hangover". Hangover". We shall refrain from - commenting as to which group we belong. This should be a great year for our Dutch Canadians. Canadians. If you have ever attempted attempted to say "eighty- eight" in the Dutch language language you will know why. • And if you wish to add the word "stoves" afterwards, this unlikely combination of words if effectively delivered delivered vocally, is guaranteed to clean out your sinuses, blow out your adenoids and deposit a wide deposit of saliva and' sputum on anything within six feet in front of you. Altogether now repeat after me ten times the following following in the most guttcral tone you can muster: "Acht in tacktig hacheltjcs", which sounds more or less like the literal translation "Oct en talkelljihes cochclches". This year it would appear the favorite location for our Yelverton friends and their associates to bid au revoir to the elderly bearded lady of 1987 (we musn't play favorites favorites in attributing the year past as masculine and be accused of sexist connotations connotations must we) and in welcoming welcoming the naked babe of 1988, was the Manvers Twsp Community Centre. Our fair community contributed some 30 of its residents to the full house dinner and dance. Warren Sutcliff and his band provided excellent excellent dancing music during the evening and the addition addition of Gary and Kathy Bristow Bristow for a few songs put the icing on the cake. Terry Staples kept the evening progressing with his parental guidance and running commentary. The true test of a band's popularity popularity is the number of folk who are still on the floor at close up time. This year there was a high percentage. percentage. The annual pilgrimage to the south to avoid at least a little of our beautiful winter weather (tongue in cheek) starts this week. A year or two ago we noted in our written perambulations perambulations that we had a fam- ily in our community who raised pure bred Siberian huskies and when opportunity opportunity presents itself use them in cross country dog sled racing. We refer of course to Mike and Mrs. Smith who live on the southern southern extreme of our Yelverton Yelverton "subdivision" and have around one dozen Siberian huskies. The huskey is not to be confused with its larger cousin the Malamute e.g. our "Grandson" Mol- son. The husky is a quiet friendly dog weighing around 40 pounds when in racing condition while a Malamute, if obese, can weigh up to 160 lbs. An opportunity to see Mike and his dogs and other sled teams in action will be provided at Kenrei Park just north of Lindsay the week-end of Jan. 6, where a racing meet is scheduled. Unfortunately, Manvers Council has to date, refused Mike a kennel license for his dogs which in our not too humble opinion, he really deserves. Hopefully, they will reconsider reconsider his application and the inequity of the existing situation, and grant him a kennel license even with a limited number of animals to be kept. It was indeed a treat for us as for thousands of Canadians Canadians to see our Canadian Junior Hockey team best their Russian counterparts. This should give our Canadian Canadian hockey a real shot in the arm following a year or two of demoralizing effort. We'll bet there were a lot of misty eyes, unrelated to New Year's Eve binge, while watching the emotional emotional effect of the win on players and coaching staff alike. To see the tears of emotion caused by a charge of Canadian pride in our country was indeed heartwarming. We trust this is one aspect of Canadianism we can sal-' vage should Bullroony proceed proceed with his "better than sliced bread" Free Trade deal with our southern neighbors. Hopefully, we shall always always be able to preserve our Canadian identity, even if it is considered by many as a dull and stodgy image. Hope he inherits RRSP holders looking for income RRn% VERSUS ANNUITIES: Now the difference is even larger! Registered Retirement Income Funds have always offered greater control and flexibility than an annuity - plus the potential for capital growth. But under today's tax laws, the difference in favour of an Industrial Croup of Funds RR1F is now even Greater. You still choose the investments... you still direct any estate planning... and you will still have the right to transfer at any time. But now you will be able to take as much income as you like each year (beyond the specified annual minimum from as many plans as you like)...and you won't have to wait until the year after your purchase to start receiving payments. So, once again, the choice is simple. What would you rather hâve: control, flexibility and potential growth?
