The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, January 13, 1988 Waverley School News Mrs. Bradley's Class By Kelly Browne Mrs. Bradley's grade three students can't wait to start off the new year in math with multiplication, metric measurement and the finishing of subtraction. Of course they're excited about other things too. For instance, instance, wouldn't you like to find out about the countries that your families came from as they're doing in their studies of Communities Abroad in Environmental Studies. They are making Japanese lanterns and doing paper folding in art and the colourful action pictures, oil pastel pictures and pop-up pictures are just beautiful. The Haikum poetry and limericks that they're doing in reading, after last terms Section Two ear ess Ms. Porter and Her Fours By Kelly Browne Ms. Porter's class of thirty-one thirty-one grade four students are starting an animal unit in reading. They will be doing library research for this unit and will have animal words in spelling. Also in spelling the class will be doing individual individual work and activities. They are also doing activities activities in math along with facts and multiplying larger numbers. numbers. In Environmental Studies Studies the class just finished a unit on health and ore now starting studies of the Inuit life. In writing, the class has his or her own writing folder and everyone has written a story and published it as a hardcover book. A parent comes in every Tuesday afternoon afternoon to help cover books. Some parents type stories at home. The finished books are read to Mrs. Snowden's class. In art the class is doing repeat designs. Chess Club By Heather Watson At the starting of the yi Mr. Mills started a Ch< Club for grades five and six. It is held in Mr. Mills' class on Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 - 12:55. In about two weeks a tournament will be starting for the Chéss players. Each player will play everyone once. At the end of the tournament Mr. Mills will see who has won the most games. The person who has won the most games will get their name on a plaque. Good luck to everyone. everyone. Mrs. Purrott's Class By Chantal Axelson Mrs. Purrott is a new teacher at Waverley. Her class is starting to study vertebrates vertebrates and inveterbrates. During this study the students students will research an animal animal from this topic that they are interested in and then present it to their class arid other classes. They will also work on writing, processing and publishing stories. They will be writing a lot, reading a lot to themselves, friends and groups. Mrs. Purrott is replacing Mrs. Trbovich while she is on maternity leave. I hope the students enjoy enjoy their new teacher. Miss Pitcher's Grades Four and Five By Heather Watson Lately the class has been working very hard. They just started a new unit in Environmental Environmental Studies which is Hants. In math the class just started fractions. In spelling the grade fours get twenty words and the fives get twenty-five words. On the ■following Friday the .students .students get a dictation. In reading reading they are reading books from the library and from the class. The classes gym teacher's name is Mrs. La- Chanse. She is now teaching volleyball skills. They are learning bumping, serving and volleying. Miss Pitcher teaches music. The class is doing very well with all their work. Acrostic poetry, Shape poetry poetry and N.V.A. poetry (Snowflakes Settle Softly), they still find time to read to Mrs. Bradley in several reading reading groups. Who wouldn't be enthusiastic about having Mr. Ralfe teach them netball in gym where they'll also be learning how to folk dance? Spelling is a lot of fun too, with the individual spelling and the activities. But the most fun of all is writing time. The class doesn't have the junior writing folders, • but Mrs. Bradley has made some that suit them. So, each day they have personal writing writing time. What a fun way to start offl988! Share the Flame By Matt Garrett Mrs. Clement, Danny Mongrain; Matt Garrett, Brad Read and Joey have been doing a Olympic Torch Run unit on Tuesdays, Wednesdays Wednesdays and Thursdays in the guidance room at 3:00 in Waverley School. Every morning one of the four students students tells where the torch is and an interesting fact about the Torch Run. They also have a chart in the hall telling telling where the torch is every day of the run. They get their information from the Toronto Star and other papers. papers. Mrs. Robinson's Class By Matt Garrett When you walk into this Kindergarten/Junior Kindergarten Kindergarten classroom you will be dazzled by the beautiful beautiful "Winter Fun" art. On one wall there are pictures of many things including: snowmen, Santa and kids playing in the snow. In phys. ed. the students either go outside or to the gym. Outside Outside they play with sleds and balls, inside they zoom on the scooter boards and biiild tunnels tunnels with Hula-Hoops. In class they build weird and wonderful things withthe big blocks and then act out skits in them. This is not all fun and games because Mrs. Robinson reads to the students students and has them answer questions about the story.
