Once the students students have learned these life skills, they will remain with them for their lifetime. The challenges and changes in today's modern society require students to be flexible and problem solving people. These people who nave those skills when they go out into society never nave to look back. The basic grounding that was acquired by taking a technical course or two has given them a well rounded background. This background enables the students students to have more choices of careers upon leaving high school. Many students wno did not have a well rounded background in high school 1 because they did not take technical courses found themselves handicapped in making career choices. Students Students who went on to further education especially with technical content found themselves behind and out of step with their classmates in university, community college, etc. It is paramount in today's society that the student, with discussions with parents, teachers, and counsellors make the right subject choices in high school. Also, another important point to consider is the leisure leisure time that students will have when they live in their own home, or apartment. Who will be able to do the maintenance and repairs? Over a person's lifetime this could add up to a considerable savings savings of money. The Ministry of Education Education recognizes that students require a well rounded education. education. This is why the Ministry Ministry of Education now states that a technical credit can now count as a compulsory credit for a student towards obtaining their high school graduation diploma. Technical education is a very important background in a student's development. < Don't leave school without it! A brief historic backgrounder Central Public School, as the chiselled date on its Wellington Wellington Street side attests, was completed in 1889 to educate educate students up to the com- E letion of grade eight. It was uilt on the site ofthe Union School which burned down in 1887. The Union School which had consisted of the public school and high school had a lively history which included its closing for several days in the 1860s when a circus occupied the grounds. The foundations of the old Union School which itself dates back to 1856 can still be found in the basement of Central School. Central School, built for just over $24,000, contains ten classrooms, halls, cap and cloak rooms, and recreation recreation rooms, and was designed designed by the respected Whitby architect, A.A. Post. The official opening of the school was attended by among others, the Honourable Honourable Edward Blake, one of Canada's foremost 19th century century statesmen. With school principal Mr. R.D. Davidson leading the singing accompanied accompanied by his wife on the organ, organ, the students sang a number of. patriotic songs. _ At on time most public school students in Bowmanville Bowmanville attended Central School and from the 1930s to the 1950s, Central along with the south ward school, produced a yearbook, the Trumpeter. Today, the school is re nowned for its band program program and the pride of students students and staff alike in the venerable building at the corner of Elgin and Wellington Wellington Streets. The school's centennial centennial celebration in 1989 is sure to be a grand event and will be celebrated through the release of a published history. All members of the community arc encouraged to get involved. Central School Wants You! As Central School nears its 100th anniversary at the corner of Elgin and Wellington Wellington Streets, preparations are under way to research, write and publish a history of the school. "I've been amazed," Mr. Ron Moore, principal of Central Central School, said, "at the wonderful wonderful stories and photographs photographs that have come to our attention in the brief time we've been working on this project. We're hoping the community gets behind us and provides whatever materials materials they might have." Plans call lor the release of the history at a grand centennial centennial celebration at the school sometime in 1989. The intention is to involve not only the whole school in the project but former students students and teachers, and the wider community. "Right now we need class photos, old notebooks, or other other curiosities people might have. We would like to borrow borrow them and make copies. As well we would like to involve involve some of the older students students in interviewing former students and teachers," said Mr. Moore. At present the school is eager to hear from people willing to share photos, memories, or their assistance. assistance. Please call Central School at 623-5614 if you can help, or Bill Humber at 623-2872.
