David Smith started in net and gave up three quick goals but after that Smith's level of concentration concentration increased and he was tough between the pipes. Ajax goalie, Steve Brooks was busy and kept Ajax in the game all night. The irony of Brooks' play is that Pat Lange, coach for the Eagles, had instructed Brooks in the art of net minding. Bowmanville fought back from the 3-goal deficit with an unassisted goal from Shawn Rekker. Rekker stole the puck, stepped up from the blue line and drove the puck high on the glove side. Brooks caught it but the force of the snot carried it in. With just minutes left in the first period, and playing four men a side, George Pithie passed across the net to Brad Cruess who dropped the puck to Jon Clieff breaking from the point, and with one motion he snapped it in from 10 feet out. Kelly Armstrong had the only goal in the second period. period. After a pass from Cruess and Pierre St. Amand, Armstrong Armstrong circled the net with the puck and slid it in Ajax's net off his backhand. Armstrong Armstrong and Cruess both played a clean, hard hitting game but still remained an offensive threat. Two minutes into the 3rd period, Steve Terry and Clieff combined to set up Chris Dreossi to put the Eagles Eagles ahead for the first time in the game. Bowmanville's insurance goal was the prettiest prettiest goal of the night. With 4:14 left in the game Armstrong Armstrong started the play off by passing to George Pithie. Pithie Pithie placed a shot on net, but just as the puck was about to go wide Jeff Dawson dove at the net and deflected the puck past Brooks. With just over a minute left, Willy McGarvey thought he could get a whistle by throwing the puck into the crowd but in stead allowed Ajax to go on the power play and bring the Ajax Axemen to within a goal. And that is how the game ended 5-4 for Bowmanville. Bowmanville. During the third perid, a puck went into the crowd and hit a fan. Thanks to the help of the St. John Ambulance Ambulance people the girl will be okay.' If" the game was played in either Darlington or the new arena, the puck would have hit the glass and the play would have continued. continued. Just another example of the need for the new arena. Bowmanville plays again at home this Sunday against Wellington. Recreation Hockey Shopper's Regains First Place On Saturday, January 9 th Shopper's and London Life's Tyke teams played a very close and entertaining game. Both goalies made some excellent saves while the forwards on both teams provided some good offence and back checking. Erik Griffin who spent last week in the hosital scored the only goal of the game in the first period to lead his team to a 14) victory. Chris Watson who was moved to centre ice and Mike McCrory, had numerous numerous breakaways, but London's London's goalie came up big, with some good saves. In the second period, Mark Ganhao who played his best game of the season hit the goal post twice, on two good set-up passes by Keven Maillet and Erik Griffin. Griffin. In the third period, Brian Lowery who was playing defense for the first time played a strong game along with Chris McKenzie, Ryan Bruce, Chris Mann and Mike Harper. Some good back checking by Danny Un- sworth, Chris Shields, Adam Barrabell, Mike Gushulak and Sean Pudlis, enabled Jake Davis who was very steady, to get his 5th shut-out of this season. The Bay Sports Minor Atom Selects The Bay Sports Minor Atom Selects played Pine- ridge Insurance of Ajax, with the visitors skating to a 2 to 1 victory. David Chambers was credited with the goal for the home team which was caused by a big pile up in front of the Ajax net. Both Steve Sargent and Brad Delorme played well, between the pipes for Bay Sports. Darren Allin and Les McCrory played a strong game on defense. This was the best game the Bay boys have played and the coaches are hoping it is a sign of things for the future. Hutton Ties Grafton On Thursday, January 7 the Hutton Transport team' travelled to Grafton to play the United Counties team. The final score was a hard fought 2 to 2 score.
