But that's not the case in Bowmanville High School. Walking down the corridors corridors of B.H.S. in the evening, evening, one is likely to hear guitars, typewriters, band saws and snippets of conversational conversational French. On January 11, the winter classes of Bowmanville High School's evening program program got under way. Norm Johnson, the night school principal, explained most of the courses are interest topics. "We aren't really offering training in a new skill for future jobs. Although some of the courses could update skills needed in the workforce, workforce, basically our classes are hobby orientated," Mr. Johnson told The Statesman. During registration, 24 courses were offered. However However only 10 were sufficiently sufficiently supported by public interest. Yoga and microcomputers microcomputers were among the most popular. The classes run two hours in length, one evening a week for 10 weeks. There are a minimum of 15 students students in each course. Woodworking Woodworking was introduced as a new choice this term. The other courses have all been offered before. The high school has never had a shortage of instructors instructors for the programs. However However the public's interests have changed. "We used to always have interest in the aerobic programs. programs. Knitting was also popular. They were offered again this term but neither are running," said Mr. Johnson. He added that the course selection depends on what instructors apply to teach. "Anyone can offer to instruct instruct a program and de pending on the public response, response, we run it. We mostly rely on teachers and parents parents of students here at the school, to instruct," he continued. continued. The students are clearly satisfied with the courses. Two women are enrolled in the woodworking class, a first for both of them. "I'ye never done anything like this (woodworking) before. before. I think it's fantastic. We might even consider starting our own carpentry business" reflected Nancy Hood, who at the time was working on the band saw. The evening program at B.H.S. is a popular alternative alternative for individuals seeking instruction in a particular skill without the responsibility responsibility of exams or additional additional work. "We just want people to come and have fun, and learn a skill while they're at it," Mr. Johnson revealed. Evening courses will be offered again next fall.
