StanHinirc » ™ • i.t. . /*_n ; by Margaret Stalker Over 120 drama students students from throughout the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education will be trained in improvisation, improvisation, acting, camera work and stage voice, at a two-day workshop at Courtice Secondary School. Called Drama Plus, the workshop is the first of its size and kind to be held cast of Toronto, according according to co-ordinator Kathryn Coverly, a Drama and English teacher at Courtice. "It's for students who have given up their time after school for drama clubs organized by teachers who have done the same," she said. A press release reveals reveals that the workshop, held Friday, February 19 and Saturday, February 20, will include training in stage movement by an actor from the Stratford Festival Company. Other workshop leaders leaders include Darryl Van- eyk, a student who has acted with Up With People and travelled throughout Northern Europe, Canada and the United States; Kevin Frankoff, a television freelancer who has performed performed with Second City in Toronto; and Joan Hills, a retired librarian previously with the Northumberland and Newcastle board who helped create a drama kit for schools and who is now a professional actress. actress. Spotlight on Figure Skating by Marilyn Ransberry This coming weekend will be a big one for area figure skaters. The 10 clubs in the surrounding area which include Cobourg, Bowmanville, Oshawa, Whitby, Port Perry, Ajax, Newcastle, Port Hope, Manvers and Orono will send skaters to compete in a competition hosted by Orono. This yearly competition is hosted by each club in turn and it is a great opportunity for the community to watch local skaters compete. The competition is open to the public for the two days Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14. On Saturday, competition will begin with the lower levels of skating at the prebeginner prebeginner level of C.F.S.A. test skaters doing their figures. Instead of a regularly scheduled meeting, meeting, Toastmasters found themselves drawing lots for the various positions and duties duties last Tuesday night. One of the benefits of being a Toastmaster is that we learn to accept challenges and as a result, we becomd more adept in handing unexpected situations. For the first time in the Chair, TM Jerry Paul started the meeting right on time and led the business session to a successful conclusiion. The Table Topics Master, TM Nancy Barnes, presented presented the trophy for Best Table Topics Speaker to our new member, TM Wanda Phillips. Phillips.
