Eagles Dump Ajax in First Round V i 11 _ T1 .1 _ /? A r. 1 J - J T> ..I OUR MISTAKE -- Two of our readers, Jean and Carl Dcvitt, have written to advise us that the Bowmanville Junior C Eagles did not come into being until the 1968- 69 season. We dated the founding of the hockey club somewhat earlier in a previous item on this page. We were advised that the team was first made up entirely of the 67-68 juveniles who were winners of the Ontario Championship against Fort Erie. The junior team was coached by Ray Preston and managed by Dan McGregor and was under the guidance of the Midget and Juvenile Association who ran all three teams for several years. The juniors later became a separate hockey organization. organization. By Kevin Anyan The Ajax Axemen knew' there was a blizzard on Sunday, Sunday, but they never expected it to continue inside the Bowmanville Bowmanville Arena. In a manner that can only mean business, the Eagles played the first game of the play-off round robin series. The team played a disciplined style that allowed them to take advantage advantage of Ajax's penalties and score 4 power play goals. When the snow stopped, Bowmanville had beaten Ajax Axemen 12-3. It took 9 1/2 minutes of the game and a "boomer" of a shot fromPierre St. Amand to get the scoring started. Brad Cruess took St. Amand's lead and made a heads up play. He came out from behind the net untouched untouched and slapped a quick shot into Ajax's goal. Bowmanville Bowmanville ended the period with a third goal on the power power play. Within 56 seconds, Shawn Rekker, Chris Dreos- si and Brian Heard each scored a power play goal and gave the Eagles a 6-0 lead. The second period ended ended 6-1 with Ajax also getting one with a man advantage. 'The third period belonged to Jeff Dawson and Troy Foster Foster with two goals each. The line of Dreossi, Steve Terry and Mark Hickey worked as a fine tuned unit and also scored two in the third. The final score, Bowmanville 12 - Ajax 3. If there is a week spot in the armor of the Eagles, it is in their penalty killing. They may be able to play this style in this division; but, as the Eagles Eagles climb the play-off ladder, ladder, they will not be able to get away with this sloppy play. Now that the play-offs are on the way, Brian Heard has started to play like the team leader he is. With Heard scoring two power- play goals and assisting on 3, he is demonstrating that he is more of a threat as a sniper sniper that as a penalized goat. Brian can taunt the opposition, opposition, as a player on the ice, to the same degree as Jerry Johnson did 10 years ago. When Heard is on this style of game, Bowmanville can expect to be in the play-offs for quite sometime. •Unfortunately, some of the players on the Eagles are not proud of the uniforms they wear. Goodyear spent hundreds of dollars to sponsor sponsor a uniformed team and with different players wearing wearing different uniforms it makes this big time sponsor look small town. 166 King St. E. 623-3396 * *Lqck Vt* Saturday, February 6, 1988.
