At the February 10th regional regional council meeting, councillors approved a recommendation recommendation to request that the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) levy a licence licence fee for the production production of aggregate resources, including gravel and asphalt. asphalt. The payment should cover road construction and resurfacing costs. According to the planning committee report, the impact impact of hauling gravel on regional regional roads is causing financial financial hardships to the region region which are reaching "crisis" proportions. The total cost incurred by the Region in road repairs due to aggregate hauling operations, operations, is estimated at $773,500 a year. With 28 aggregate production production pits, the Town of Newcastle Newcastle is presently the second second largest producer of aggregate materials in the region. It was estimated that four per cent of the money spent on road construction construction in Newcastle was due to damage caused by heavy trucks. There were approximately approximately 11,834,000 tonnes of gravel trucked through the entire region in 1985, Today, on average, there are about 1,800 loaded truck trips per day in Durham. The region is asking the MNR to decide the appropriate appropriate level of financial assistance assistance necessary to address address deficiencies in the road network attributable to the transportation of mineral aggregates. A report made by the regional regional works department in 1987 said a fee of 9.7 cents per tonne was appropriate payment to cover costs of road upkeep.
