' ' That was but a partial Basic Rules For Toastmasters Ever since the days of the ancient Greek orators, virtually virtually every successful speaker has followed the same basic guides to the opening of a speech. They are: 1, start with a attention getter and 2, Preview the subject of your speech. Trite and ineffective openings such as the artificial artificial compliment and the pointless time-check are bound to produce yawns. The artificial compliment is usually delivered with a grim tnat's too wide, by a . voice with too much syrup. The speaker is pleased to be in "your fine town... in this fine auditorium... addressing the finest audience. " Does the speaker know where he is and who his audience is? Probable not. A sincere compliment compliment is a valid opening to a speech, but it must contain honest praise for specific features, the historic imp<fr- tance of the hall in which you speak, the recent honor received or the successful campaign undertaken by the audience. Speakers using the pointless pointless time-check make a show out of taking their watches off their wrist or out of their pocket. They inquire about the length of time available for their speech, and then very often, they ramble on ana on and on into the next speaker's time or into lunch. Toastmasters learn to finish a speech within five percent of the assigned time. A valuable valuable skill indeed! TM Connie Nelson and TM Marilyn Dow stayed within their time limits when they spoke last Tuesday evening. "Reflections" by TM Nelson was an Ice Breaker Speech and "Oh, my Gosh" by TM Dow utilized the objectives of the Speech Manual. TM Bryden presented the trophy for Best Speaker to TM Nelson. Nelson. The General Evaluator, TM Ralph Tukkcr, called upon TM Irene Konzelmnnn and TM Carson Elliott to evaluate the two speakers. TM Konzelmann won the trophy for Best Evaluator. TM Nancy Barnes, the Table Topics Master, rewarded TM Nelson with the trophy for being the Best Table Topics Topics Speaker that evening. The Chairman, TM Joe Christl,_ thanked everyone for making tho mooting interesting interesting and stimulating. IIo presented tho Spark Plug to TM Konzelmann. Bowmanville Toastmasters Toastmasters meet every Tuesday at tho Lions Contre at 7:30 p.m. sample of the events going on during the Drama Plus weekend held for students within the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education. The program took place February 19 and 20 at Courtice Courtice Secondary School. It's the first workshop of its size and kind to be held east of Toronto according to Kathryn Coverly, a Drama and English teacher at Courtice. She also served as co-ordinator , of the prog- > ram. • "It's for students who have given their time after school for drama clubs organized organized by teachers who have done the same," she added. Included in the workshop was training in camera work, acting, voice training, improvisation, and movement. movement.
